don't forget what Fitzy did

Many people here are criticising Osborne - and there are some valid issues. However don't look at Fitzy with rose coloured glasses. He had nearly 30 years at the helm and had no success post 1986. He made comments about no guarantee that Parra would exist in 5 years, tried to merge our club, used club money for a soccer team and to take over parra union club, had never heard of Fui when smith signed him and had little recognition of the fans. Removing him from the club - given that he held two posts - was an almighty achievement. Don't forget his past when and if he stands in any club election and remember the current board has only had two years. Any changes they are making is for the purpose of the Eels winning  - it is not in their interest for the club to fail. They support the club as passionately as we do if not more. They were passionate enough to try to make changes to 25 years of failures. I for one want to give them a go. And the point is that they can terminate Osborne if they are unhappy with him. Fitzy never sacked himself after years of blunders!

  • Sunk 10 million into soccer, a rival code. Wanted to merge us at every opportunity. Couldn't guarantee our future after the polis tax came in. I know people are disenchanted with the current administration but all I'll say is be very careful who you vote for and remember the past.
  • Fitzy's lack of respect for supporters forced me to stop having a season ticket around 1998. I had held one since 1970s - yes i had a cumberland oval season ticket - it was a card that used to be hole punched at each game! I bought a season ticket this year because of the change and will renew for next year. Let's give the board and Osborne a chance.
  • Excuse me, this is a site open to young children. We don't need to be giving them nightmares LOL
    • Funny comment mate!
  • totally agree, didnt make the semis again till 1998. failed big time
  • Fitzy had his problems for sure.

The amusing thing about Fitzy is that he started off as a "rebel" within Rugby League and was ousted by a "rebel ticket".

Yeah, Fitzy tried to have us merge with other teams, wanted us to jump to Super Greed ...I mean Super League, every season would petition the league to drop the try conversion, thought League should merge with Union .... yup, he had his moments ....

The best things he did, apart from leaving, he brought jack Gibson to the club (tho there were plenty of stories to tell that he was the reason Jack left after 1983) and after the heartache of trying to cultivate a team with juniors and washed up players no other club wanted, FINALLY opened the purse strings and gave us Pay, Dymock, Smith, McCraken, that brought our fortunes back again.

Personally, from me, a simple fan, the negatives of Fitzy outweigh the positives over the years.

I agree that we should let the new board have a run and see what they can do .... as long as they too open the purse strings and bring back a football manager, skills coaches, recruitment officers .....
  • Some people Do have Short Term Memories mate.

    Facts are facts.

I say there does need at least 2 high profile and experienced Business Men on the parra board.

But the remainder should be given a least 2 years more to prove their actions speak louder than Words.
1 year is not long enough to clear out the dead wood and make changes after 30y ears of Luna Park.
  • yep remember that one very vividly too.
  • As I recall, at the time we were looking at both Miles and Lewis due to their friendship with Sterling and Kenny. What could have been LOL
  • I recall being at a members draw YEARS ago now when Fitzy was drawing out numbers (I think it may have been for grand final tickets) ....

as he was calling out the numbers I recall him saying "next ticket is M2782 .... that's M for MILES"

not sure what soured the deal there, but things seemed pretty clear that we were to have quite the Queensland connection .... Bob Lidner, Gene Miles, Wally Lewis ......

Ah, the Eels Empire that could have been!!

"Randy,  An interesting one.
I suppose coaches trust certain players or believe they're the best fit for the team, even if club form or a high minute count aren't there.
I'd choose you for x-factor even if you only had 5 minutes of form."

"Hoe, I dislike the idea that a player can be selected for Aust with only 480 club minutes on show...and not all of them good. How can he have form without playing?
Perhaps a rule that said 10 nrl games to be eligible for Aust would help everyone"
