In a surprising coup the dogs look likely to scoop Pappy from the storm for 2025, the dogs were in talks to snare rooster Terell May but discovered Papps was on offer and did not waste a beat, they need a fullback desperately. .
As fortune stands, Ryles has expressed keen interest in May ... Swings N Roundabouts folks.

Looking strong everwhere except for the hooker position - is Ryley Smith any good?

We have a huge warchest and the dogs are front runners ? If true it really leaves me scratching my head as to how. Surely they're paying some of JACs freight.
Since he was sacked, there would have been something in his deal that leads to the forfeiting of money if sacked for certain reasons. Dogs wont be paying anything i reckon.
Yeah I dunno, Todd Carney ended up with a large settlement. I don't think players can just be sacked unless it's a criminal act or multiple warnings and steps taken. There are so many factors and grey areas at play I am leaning toward them having paid him a settlement to fuck off. It was just too clean considering he called in the lawyers.
That's why we need to stop being negative as a club and buy who we need first. Then you sack players if u need to fix cap. Dogs understand the game. We do it backwards
Ok we buy who need, but with what money? We needed to move on players to buy what we need?
The dogs have shown you buy first, you balance the books later by tapping players on shoulder.
Eels have tapped 11 players on shoulder, moved on Gutho divot and RCG early, yet recruited 2 young fullbacks on the cheap, a bench backrower from Sharks and maybe a winger that is slightly less in cost compared to Sivo. Makes no sense.
should be signing Papps first for example, then to fix cap allow Gutho to leave. Simple
And we have the money for Papenhuyzen to start with? We went into 2024 relying on Ron Massey players as we didn't have money to fill our top 30.
You saying we had $1 mil lying around before anyone else left? We still needed to re-sign the likes of Hopgood first for example.
Makes no sense? We are getting younger and seems Paps injuries along with price didn't correlate.
You say fix cap, what happens if you cannot move Gutho on or have to fork out most of his pay? You just went and spent on a Fullback and have limited money to fix anywhere else.
You free up cap first then sign. Dogs got a massive war chest once the back paying from Hasler was over, they released players as they just didn't want them. Dogs had a rubbish cap for years then finally was over paying others.
You might say that's what we might do like dogs, but you can still do that doing the way you say.
We have so many areas to fix so needed to coin right away. What's the point of "we might have to money you want"
I do not see how releasing RCG after signing a Prop would have made a difference? Those are the players we wanted to sign and would sign regardless. Not like oh we keep RCG we get AFB, then get rid or RCG.
You say we have so many areas to fix and needed coin straight away. We got our coin and purchased what? What did we fix? We are praying fullback works, they were both lower graders/juniors. Nothing is guaranteed.
All players regardless of what contract they are on at Parra can be moved on if needed. Thats why you buy now, fix cap later.
Plus Paps is elite, a spine player and exactly what our team needs
"Nothing is guaranteed" Exactly, that includes Papenhuyzen. I have no issue signing Papenhuyzen, it is the notion we sign him then release players. So yeah we got coin, to fill our squad. But by keeping RCG, Gutho and Sivo until we signed someone else would have gotten us different players? This is nothing to do with the players we signed, it is the process of which you are saying we should sign then release, when you need to release then sign in a process like this.
Well players can be moved on if they agree to be moved on. Say Lane, told he can look elsewhere yet has a 2 year deal left, he is not leaving. He has a contract that we must honour, so that can stuff up the plan of purchase now fix later. Instead wait to see if he does go then go after what is needed. If there is nothing worthwhile you keep them. But if you need cap space, like we did, you release then use the money to recruit. How can you buy now if you have no money? Might only have $400k available? Or you have $1mil, use it on Paps, but have 5 spots to fill in top 30 and can barely move on players you want to. Then end up with only say $1.5 mil on 5 spots. $300k per player roughly, needed to re-sign Hopgood also. Of course just spitballing numbers as an example.
Plus buying now means you buy what is out there right away. We are now in position to sign May, could we have done that having RCG still at the club on his salary? A bit of his money is used for May, so to get deal done you free it up. Top 30 is our goal, having depth. That's a need. We let 11 go but their money was not counted when Ryles was making moves before seasons end, re-signing players he wanted to keep.
We need to fill a top 30, you act like there is a massive market at the moment for players this year, there was not. Papenhuyzen was the no.1 yes, but even then there are doubts. I have no issue with him as a player. Now if you are saying try and buy a player one at a time as you release or at least know you have a replacement, like for example agree with JAC then release Sivo, ok i can agree with that. Instead of just letting go Gutho, RCG and Sivo at once.
But i do agree Papenhuyzen is elite, when on the field and healthy. Great discussion though Titan.
