At last some serious playing and coaching nous has been recruited  to the Eels coaching ranks. Premiership winners among them. Top level coaching among them. It's  such a positive move. Can they all contribute successfully  with BA. To me they will have influential roles with so many of our players , experienced and inexperienced alike. This maybe the real kick we need to take us to title success.

  • Yes Seth it sounds positive although with my blue  and gold eyes it is risky as after last season's performance by Parra we might win this year anyway so why take risks this year with any major changes mate ? .

    • Driza, if we look back at last year and the previous one as well, I believe that the void we had was in the limitations of the assistant coaches. We had Kidwell, and Murf as the two main assistants, with Joey on a limited arena with primary position of helping/coaching the halves.  The restrictions with Joey with the move north did not really do much if anything for the team.

This year we have the same two in Kidwell and Murf, but their contracts run out end of this year, which I don't believe is a great loss overall. Although they have helped in keeping the team on a fair level and in the finals for 3 years, need to be better to go higher.

The recruitment of Ennis & Mary along with the appointment of Woolford as Juniors coach, (also there is one other coach in the ranks who coaches the NSW Cup team, Covid knocked that comp on the head again) the 3 or 4 coaches aside from Kidwell and Murf should make a difference with fresh ideas and with the new coaches giving the club/teams a fresh & new outlook.

      • I understand Colin . However even with the assistance BA has had to date , ( those of whom I must add were all heavily ridiculed on this site throughout last season pre finals and seasons before ) , we still went closer than we have for 10 years to making a grand final . I believe in the familar saying " if it ain't broke don't fix it " . However apart from Ennis's personality I admire the skills of these experts added to our coaching staff and hope they give us that slight extra skill to help Parra win more consistently this year and better still win the big one . GO PARRA !!!

  • Ennis
No-brainer here, he's a smart and cunning footy player that's had success and won comps and is coaching the playmakers. The answer is yes.

    Mary
Good enough to be a full-time coach so he can help Arthur across the broad spectrum of coaching tasks which free's up Arthurs time, but he didn't have much success at the Dragons and made some crucially bad recruitment mistakes. I'm not sure what his exact role is though, so it's hard to measure any success against.

    Woolford
Not sure about this guy, always seemed like a capable and tough hooker without having much success that I can remember. Happy to give him time coaching the juniors though.

The biggest gap we had was someone to manage the strategic gameplans imo... Is this up to Ennis?

    • That sums up my thoughts well. Mary and Woolford don't strike me as game changers but are both no nonsense types that will do a job.

Ennis is interesting, hoping he can have some influence on our game plan. Especially when it comes to adapting our game plan and exploiting sides weaknesses. Something we don't seem to do much of.

      • I'm thinking the addition of Mary might free some time up for Arthur to work on these game plans with Ennis. Promising is that's the case

    • Clintonian, can't see any negatives here . The more experienced  voices the better. A little tip here a little tip there might sway a big moment our way.

    • He did well as head coach in England, I would not be writing him off this early.  Ennis was a cunning and niggling player and was hard nosed, should he get a full time role at the eels, I can see more postives than negatives, perhaps have Hindmarsh as his assistant would be interesting.

Mary has had a fair amount of time as head coach at the Drags, while not spectacular in those years, as it was more like a yo yo contest with the drags, I believe that he was a better coach than what was on show, I don't believe he had the full support of the bosses, likewise some of the players did not like his discipline either, and that is shown out with Cory Norman and how reacted to all his coaches.

      • McGregor has always been rated as a pretty good assistant.

      • I'm definitely not writing him off, and I rate McGregor as a capable NRL coach. He had the Dragons firing for the first half of his seasons during his early years, but that's not the time of the year that you want them firing. This comes down to experience I guess.
