Discreet Melbourne tactics

It's a wonder watching the game how Melbourne are able to discretely hide some of their less than desirable tackling skills. Here are a few i noticed melbourne using and have decided to label them feel free to add any that i miss. The Thailand massage which is elbows used on chest, lower back and legs to get off players in tackles. The Aeroplane is arms outstretched while head and shoulders weigh in on player trying to play the ball, one of my favourites The Achilles Heel which is when the tackling player tries to push the ankle area making the achilles tendon fully extended beyond its natural range of movement. This brings me to the Liquorice twist which is the ankles twisted almost similar to an arm bar lock only using the players own ankle as leverage. The Gooseneck this is complicated as it needs two players as the first holds the body and tries to put him on his back while the second player firmly grasps the head and moves the opposite way or tries to hold it still. The Wristwatch is when the player playing the ball tries to get up the arm used to get the player back to his feet his held down by the wrist or hand by the tackler, the Pileup is used when a player is piled upon by 4 or more players and players peel off 1 at a time. They seem to come up with a new one like the Cooper Cuddle which i think only Cooper Cronk is allowed to use where you lie flat on a player and cuddle him as hard as possible. There are a few more that i may have missed and although i jest about labelling the tactics some are very dangerous and should never be tried onfield or anywhere else. There are players that are quite adept at using all of these within the Melbourne team, and i can only hope that we never employ these skills in our team.

  • If you notice any tacling style which could cause injury and it looks like a tactic used by any club bring it up with the Nrl, they will look at it closely, thats how they noticed the chicken wing and grapple. Is it just me or Melbourne seem to get away with standing 1 or 2 metres offside constantly, the whole team does it .
  • I saw all of these tackles too. They did some of them to Mateo (Wristwatch) and Burt (Gooseneck). Slater did the Gooseneck on Burt. Blair did Mateo. Bastards. I wonder if they would be legal if the NRL reviewed them?
  • I think its the Queensland culture at Melbourne, they win most of the time but when behind they cannot handle it and bend the rules to say the least.
  • When Cooper Gronk performed the Cooper Cuddle, on Jarryd Hayne (Right after the headbutt), i do believe he slipped in the tongue.

The replay on the TV does look like Gronk has a thing for our Jarryd. Maybe We can use that as a bargaining tool to lure him here cheaper!
    • Sliding knees and elbows to the back of the head are another two that i forgot to name,so i'll call them Stealing home and the Panadol.
  • For years they have been the dogs of the competition, which wouldn't be so bad if everyone got away with the same dog tactics but one I don't want that style of play and two, we would get picked up for it anyway. Hate the Dragons and Nathan Brown but I remember a press confrence years ago, where he blew up about the Storm, not so much on their tactics just the fact that the refs penalised them for fighting fire with fire. The Storm unfortunatley have been a protected species for so long, hopefully there time is at an end now, and all will come out about this filthy dogs.
  • Well it didnt work WE WON !!!!!!
  • if they play like dogs, they should get treated like dogs!!!!!!!!!
jarryd just did what us fans want to do! ( headbutting slater )
  • Seems to be a common feeling.
If we can't beat them, let's change the rules.
Fact: Melbourne are the best wrestlers in the game. Period. Change the rules. Abolish the grapple. Melbourne are STILL the best wrestlers in the game.
And if you want to talk DOG tactics.
