Depression blog???

I've noticed that old mate who was suffering depression that his blog is missing. I understand that it may have gotten a little too personal s and the mods moveed which is ok. I. The other reason I see Lot is that those with depression will post in time of need and retract around 24 hours later.... usually due to the cyclical nature of depression that they feel shame due to to "blurting things out" things out. I don't know what the case is but I want to say to the poster that you have nothing to be ashamed of.... we are all supportive here and poppa is an example. But he is not the only one... please don't feel ashamed or intimidated to post... depression affects more than 1 in 3 people and when you post you are probably reaching more people in more ways than you know....

  • No shame in feeling blue.
  • The black dog can bite anyone, no shame, no blame. Its just one day at a time

  • There are plenty of places to seek professional help. Google is your friend, but so too many on here.
1 in 3 people huh? There are 3 replies, so who is it?
It ain't me. As quoted in the 'bring out your dead' scene in the Holy Grail, 'I feel happpppppy!'.
  • I was wondering over the break why depression seems to effect a large number of Footy players and what we can do to reduce that number.

For those who may have experienced it or have a better grasp of the triggers, is there any correlation between depression and footy players who were made to feel like kings, paid well, had a team around them. Who then retire, go back to an 'ordinary' life with 'ordinary' pay and less team structure around them?

Im assuming that certain people have a genetic disposition to falling into depression, much like some have a genetic disposition to being overweight. But there still needs to be the trigger.

    • Young footy players along with plenty of other young sports people are not taught to have any sort of resilience until it is far too late.
Kids are rewarded for mediocrity and just turning up. They have a sense of entitlement & want everything straight away (that others have worked there arses off for years to have).
Make no mistake, society has created this mess.
Do yourselves a favour and watch this if you haven't already.

    • You are probably right in saying there is some genetic basis for most things. In my life experience (having two autistic children is quite challenging) I have found that women are far more resilient than men and deal with adversity much better. So I'm not sure if there is some sort gender difference?

  • I am currently under the black dog & seems so hard to extricate me from these feelings. Several times the only thing that has stopped from the final step is my love of the Eels & wanting another premiership. Am on anti-depressants, not really helping yet

    • How long have you been taking them Craig? Getting out from under these feelings can take time and it can be tough work. If you're not sure the medication is working for you, talk to your doctor. Your doctor and any other specialists you're working with are there to support you in getting to recovery mate. You're not alone in having depression, and you're not alone in working to get better.
    • craig you have have made the biggest step. in seeking help good onya mate .trust those around you and you will be fine.
