Depression

Hey all,Hopefully by now you have all seen the gallen myles ad...Depression is a major killer of young men... But it also affects men and women of all walks of life...My old man, who got me following parra, despite growing up on the beaches, has recently had a battle with the black dog... It cost him his home, his job and his social life...If like to make this blog a place where blokes (and Sheila's) can talk about what is causing them grief, and hopefully the one eyed members can provide their support..I for one have a problem when I get on the cans, and to all my mates I can appear like a "Debbie downer", but I'm lucky I have mates who understand that I just need a quick cheer me up...I hope you all feel comfortable sharing your own stories... And I hope there will be no judgement here...

  • What a wanker!

No, just juicing Pete, great blog.

I posted a few Debbie Downer posts in the cupboard when my bro died in November.

It actually made me feel mildly better at the time.

    Great idea.

  • :(

  • I often got depressed at times in my 20's, what worked for me was completely stripping down naked and looking in the mirror and being honest with myself, most men would kill for my gift from god! That thought comforted me and pushed me to use my gifts to the best of my ability for the rest of mankind.

  • Not only with depression by all facets of ones life, we all have different make ups. If alcohol is a known downer for you Pete as it is with many who suffer with depression best to avoid the drink, or drink at the level that best suits your mental health and not comparable to what others do. With depression you need to be aware of avoiding the things you know that contribute further to bringing on the "black dog" with the things that are actually in your control. For those suffering unfortunately at times it is out of their control and no fault of their own.

I'm sorry to hear about what your dad has been going through, but he is still here and tomorrow is another opportunity for him turn things around. I hope he is seeking some professional help.

    • I agree. There are things you can control, and things you can't. Focus on the things you can control, start with the easiest first.
  • Check these sites out. Who knows they may even be better than this one for advice ;)

Seriously these sites are specific helping deal with depression.

  • Good Blog PETE.

I have lost a few friends to depression related suicide. Looking back - on the surface they all had :

    • Good families and strong family support
    • Everything to live for
    • no Financial issues
    • at the peak of their powers so to speak
    • no drug or alcohol addictions
    • great careers

The Black dog doesnt discriminate who it targets. I have seen a lot of sad things in my life, and trying to answer a basic question always gets me . That question always involves the word WHY ?  No winners, no answers, no turning back. The thing I have learnt in my life is that EVERYONE has something to say if you listen to them. EVERYONE has something to contribute if you give them the opportunity.  Talk to your mates, take to your kids, listen to them and look for the signs. It is only in tragedy that the signs appear so obvious.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing but GUILT and INACTION will haunt you for the rest of your days.

If people treat this courageous blog with ridicule then that is disappointing. We all don't live perfect lives, we are all looking for something. Share your thoughts people - it costs nothing and you never know what impact it may have on someones life.

Cheers.... Life is not a practice run or trial match. It is the main event.

    • Absolutely PT, well said.

As the mother of sons I hope the day arrives soon, that men realize it's o.k to speak openly and honestly about their feelings,to someone. It only takes that one someone to sometimes change things around for another.

Good on you Pete for speaking up.
