BOOM five-eighth Daniel Mortimer has today signed a new two-year contract with the Parramatta Eels worth an estimated $500,000.

The Eels rookie knocked back a massive offer from the Bulldogs, the club where his father Peter and uncles Steve and Chris won premierships.

Parramatta will announce Mortimer's signing at a press conference later this morning in a huge boost for the club before Friday night's blockbuster season opener against the Dragons.

Mortimer is so highly thought of in the game that he has been signed by Channel Nine's Footy Show, after less than one season of first grade football.

More details will be available later today.

Mortimer spent the weekend with Chris, his cousin Ned and brother Tim on the family farm in Wagga Wagga as he wrestled with his decision.

Chris said his nephew had given no indication over the weekend about his future - and didn't even raise it with him - but insisted that the Mortimers' great tradition at the Bulldogs should not sway him.

"The Mortimer name should come into it at all - it should not be a factor," he said. "That was 20 years ago. We had a great association with the Bulldogs, but those times have passed.

"My allegiances will always lie with Canterbury, but his best option seems to be at Parramatta. He's struck the right chord there.

"We didn't even talk about it when he was down here.

"We sat up on the hill at the farm, and had a few beers, but he never brought it up."

  • i posted this up on another thread but i felt it appropriate here as well.

Bravo, what a mature desicion morts has made..............

the bulldogs didnt want him as a kid but the eels did and nurtured him to the player he is today by coming through the ranks,
this is a good sign of a level head.

The bulldogs are just the morons we all expect them to be, trying to pressure the kid into signing by throwing the mortimer/bulldogs history in his face, so screw them, i am so glad he signed with us and not bow to the turncoats the dogs are.

i am also glad his father did not pressure him either but he did state that although the dogs and the Mortimer name have a big history it was the eels that looked after him.

so to say the least i am very happy on 2 counts....
1, that he is staying an eel
2, he threw egg on all those moron faces back at the dogs (screw them)
  • hope he is worth the 500 000 after just seeying him play for a year, hope he doesnt slack off after this contract.
