did anyone catch the fan with vossy on fox last night .well he told the story about how a group of union players got together at the horse and jockey hotel at homebush in 1908 and formed the cumberland r.l. club. the competition had 8 or 9 teams all break aways from union. playing 9 rounds.cumberland missed the first round as they had to play a trial to show they were up to standard (blind freddy ) passed them and so they came in in round 2 .they chose the colours of cumberland council. blue and gold which were later chosen by parramatta eels in 1947.
now my family history which i believe is the curse of nudger on the eels. my granddad was a member of that founding club in 1908 his name was arthur harris but was known as erick he was 22 yrs .
they only lasted 1 season then folded. that one season they won only 1 game 14 /6 against western suburbs at birchgrove oval. where i was to play my first game of rl many years later .before that win they had 6 losses in a row (will we emulate that )they are the shortest lived club in history. my g/father was the sp bookie at the horse and jockey for many years.until he worked from home when the t.a.b started.i was born 2 blocks away in homebush.seeing as the wests magpies were the local club my father was a wests supporter as are my 2 brothers. my dad would take to pratten park to watch wests game players i liked were ned kelly don parish keith holman ron gitauh and peter dimond.
but when i got old enough to know better. i became an eels supporter.
so i have a bit of a history with cumberland / parra eels.is my family a mock. i mean i was there when we burnt down the stand.
