Crowds! NRL vs AFL

The NRL finals match between Penrith Panthers and Cronulla Sharks (both Sydney based teams) attracted a crowd of 19000 (approximate) and the AFL finals match between Melbourne and Hawthorn ( both Melbourne based teams) attracted a crowd of 90000 (approximate). It seems the NRL are doing something right!

  • The nrl.are for the first time beating afl in tv ratings, however the sharks and the roosters are shocking in suppoeter numbers.
Who remembers that dogs eels semi upwards of 70k ?
    • Does the NRL gets as much dollars $ from Television viewing as per actual game attendance?

      • Broadcasting accounts for about 75% of the game’s revenue

  • Simple cunts like simple sports. Look at how many people watch soccer all over the world.

    • Amazing deduction

  • AFL isn’t anywhere near as good to watch on tele as live...so much happening off the ball spatially. Whereas League is very easy all happening in more or less a straight line...which makes it easy to capture and great to watch on tele.

either way can’t believe so few fans turned up to watch with their team in the semi’s...must be coz anz  is just awful

    • It was allianz

  • GayFL
    • AFL better live, NRL a better game on TV.

  • No problem with this comparison, just put the TV rating comparison in the same post. The game doesn't make much from gate takings, it's all in the multi billion dollar TV rights deals.

I go to many games, but I can understand why people would prefer to sit on the couch at home. I also have no doubt heaps more would attend NRL matches if Sydney was exactly like inner Melbourne with their stadiums and public transport Etc. Not to mention that AFL is great live (heaps of action off the ball) and NRL is great on TV (all the action is exactly where the camera is pointed).
