Crab Paulo the player is not to blame

I know how most people on this site feel about Joseph Paulo, but I'd like the following to be considered. It is not Paulo the player that is the issue. It is Paulo's role that is the problem. In his role he is probably handling the ball more than any other player, except the dummy half. He takes the ball in a first receiver role and then hands off to a forward or to our halves. So our halves are often reliant on Paulo for when they get the ball, especially when we attack in the oppositions quarter. Is it any wonder that we are more effective from long range than close to the line?Paulo has talent but not to play such a key role. If one of our favourite players like Gower was put in this role the problem would be the same. It is placing too much emphasis on one player to do the hard yards in defence and hit ups and be in the playmakers role.Paulo is playing the role that our coach asks of him. If he wasn't, BA wouldn't be selecting him.So who is the problem? The player who takes on the role he is asked to play or the coach who has not changed that role all year in spite of what we consider to be overwhelming evidence? I'm a big wrap on Arthur but, as I've said in previous blogs, he's trying to play with too many halves and it's to the detriment of players like Sandow and Norman.

  • I don't think Paulo is much chop... doesn't have the grunt of a decent forward nor the talent of a skillful half - one of those in-between players.

That said - there is some real merit to the thinking that it is the role he is in. Personally I just don't get the role, this strange 'link' type role. To me it seems to achieve nothing other than him getting in the way and yes, agree, it does no favours to the halves. the halves should be directing and steering the side around, along with the 9 however with Sef in this role it is like they need to wait and see what he's doing when he is busy 'linking' before they can sort out what they are doing.

We seem to break down and stall so much in attack... particularly around late tackle plays... and it seems there is just no flow - it becomes disjointed and clunky. This is generally when Borey ends up just standing there playing his usual game of "stop... come and get me".

  • Sefa also has a role to play in defense and as a ball runner, in which both of these aspects of he's game are pathetic.

Why should the team go into games a forward short to accommodate a role in which our halves should handle.
    • Zero dominant tackles for the season.
      Zero intimidation factor.
      Zero big hits.
      Zero line breaks.
      Zero big hit ups.

      Wake up mick.
  • This is my point. His role is wrong. We are going in with one less forward for him to play this role. It's splitting his role too many ways so that he can't excel in anything. Remember, the coach gives him this role. I'm certain that the indecisiveness of the halves is almost completely due to this.
  • Spot chief, i wonder how many dominate tackles and 1 on 1 tackles he would be involved with???  Not many i would think.

  • I don't know. I just don't get the Joe Paulo love on here.

People need to head down to Specsavers and pick up a two for one, cause I honestly cant see the value he adds to our side.

  • We already have 3 play makers excluding him, I don't see why Paulo is needed really. But apparently he is doing his job and keeping BA happy.

    • Great album...

  • Crab gets this part as there is no other part in the team for him. He is no good as a forward and is absolutely not a half. He plays this part as he is good friends with Hayne and this is the only way to keep Hayne happy and allow crab to play. Yes the structure is to blame for the confusion in the halves and attack. It also pushes the halves to wide and gives true ball players no room to do anything and this is the reason they look average. No he is not needed as seen when he is not on, attack flows better and the halves do their job. As for stats they are never correct so you can not go by them.

"Agreed. I won't renew him no matter how well he plays. He was still sketchy yesterday. He is a good impact bench player against tired edges and Moses slipping him balls. "

"Hmmm. The only in would be Moretti for me. Maybe. I'd let him maybe have more time in reggies first. I'd keep Guymer.
So basically, same team. Yes even De Belin. I want De Belin to be in the team first few rounds then things will change IMO. Him…"
