Could we be heading to a super bowl style GF?

Peter V'Landys has opened up that a super bowl style GF of rotating the venue every year to the highest bidder. Now of course, being a traditionalist, i think this is stupid. Sydney should always have the GF, full-stop. Melbourne would never let the AFL GF leave Victoria, so why should we allow the NRL GF to be played in cities like Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne?

The reason the Super Bowl concept works in the NFL is due to the game being massive around America, plus majority of the time only the best stadiums get them anyway, cities like Cincinnati, Cleveland, Baltimore never get super bowls, preferably the NFL likes either warm climates or domes for the best weather possible. Why take an NRL GF to Adelaide when they do not even have a team, have fans travel with flight and accomodation prices tripling and rewarding people of Adelaide turning up for the biggest game of the year? Origin is fine with that for the reason being I like the even playing field that both NSW and QLD get one game a year each. I understand that Melbourne or QLD fans have to do same to come to Sydney, but majority of our teams are in Sydney, plus going to say Adelaide or Perth or even Melbourne, there will be two sets of fans travelling, Melbourne there is a chance if Melbourne do not make it.

If you are going to move it, QLD would be a better due to the fact they are a rugby league state, even though they are not as diehard for League itself as experts claim, look during COVID moving in 2021, they said most games will have 40,000 there. Melbourne v Penrith Prelim got 29,000 at Suncorp, just over half the stadium, when experts said they would sell out every game.

I do think there is a chance V'Landys is playing silly buggers with NSW Government in order to up their price and get some leveredge on them to do what they want, he is a smart man and has had a good connection with NSW Government, especially with Gladys Berejiklian. Hopefully we have the GF forever though.

What does everyone else think.

  • I don't mind the area tbh

  • If it's not going to be in Sydney then it shouldn't be up to the highest bidder. It should be at the top qualifying teams home ground (though that will never happen).

I think you're on the money when you say V'landys is trying to leverage the price up. Right now, it makes no sense to play anywhere other than Sydney. Until Brisbane have a stadium that is the size of Accor then I reckon the NSW Gov know that V'Llandys is foxing.

The only other stadium bigger than Accor is the MCG and it would be incredibly stupid for the NRL to entertain such an idea of taking the GF to Vic.

  • I dont mind the idea... if eels ever make it to another gf, i would travel anywhere to see the game and would make a weekend or a weeks trip out of it

  • He needs to go, a Penrith & Parramatta Grandfinal in Brisbane? Peter needs to go.

    • How is it any different to Broncos v Storm in Sydney or Broncos v Cowboys in Sydney

  • This is a political ploy to get the NSW government to make good on its promise to deliver four brand new suburban stadia.

    • I wonder if the Labor Government will initiate that? Hopefully.

  • It's a money grab exercise,  the highest bidder wins. He us just trying to Max out the games revenue, as he should.
