Could the channel nine commentary get any worse?

IMO the commentary on channel nine reaches new lows every week. Clearly they have adopted a policy of not focusing on refereeing blunders, to the point that they hardly even show replays which would demonstrate the error. Phil Gould is the only member dragging his feet on this policy but limits himself to the trademark "wow".But worse than the " no bashing refs" policy , is the "lets make has been greats sound smart", policy.I find this almost insulting as the viewer. Last night the team contained both Johns, Lockyer & Fittler. Undisputed, they were three of the greatest players in most of our lifetimes, but for two of them at least, that were it should have ended. Not willing to admit to a failed project, the directors appear to have started providing "script on the run", where either Warren or Gould will ask the the legends a scripted question and they read back the scripted answer.Good idea you would think. WRONG. Unfortunately, legends appear not to be able to read with expression and the answers are delivered in a way that sounds like they are reading instructions for installing a washing machine. Their tone screams "not original thought", their mispronunciation of words screams "partly illiterate" and the abrupt end to the scripted answer screams "got through that one, was that okay?".BTW, this is also how Mark Geyer is managed on MMM. Although in fairness he is given paragraphs not sentences to read that appear loosely based on his thoughts and he is getting better at it.As a viewer with no other means of being able to watch the game and one who has always enjoyed good commentary, i am finding the current offering a little insulting to even my own moderate intelligence.GET REAL CHANNEL NINE!

  • Totally agree Ken, the non replay of any questionable ref decisions is condoning the refs right to make them and not bringing it up for attention. It seems the NRL and Channel 9 are saying 'let's pretend that didn't happen'. Ref decisions are getting worse and it's totally spoiling the game. How many games each week are now being decided by incorrect rulings by refs? Too many, so the NRL throw their hands up and bury their heads in the sand and hope fans will stop complaining......
  • Rather they get on with it personally.
  • I watch the games from a tiny bar in another country and it’s embarrassing when watching a game with my expat mates. They laugh at the quality and style of Channel Nines commentary and when you compare it to English Soccer or the NFL you can understand why. It’s so bloody bad.

  • Can. And will.
  • If its live, get a radio feed and turn down the tv volume. The radio feed is delayed but it is much better.

Channel 9 wants to attract the viewers of the lowest common denominator demographic.  I am not having a go at people with a lower iQ.

I never watch free to air to TV unless it footy on 9 and I watch 2 and SBS. The programming on 9,7, 10 is absolute drivel.

Have you ever watched current affair programs or so called news programs on these channels (Bolt report). They are full of sensationalised half truths with opinion pieces to reflect owners views like Gina. "Africans get paid $2 a day we pay Australians to much. Australians should not drink and go on holidays". etc etc

    • Bolt is the TV equivalent of a talkback radio shock jock. It is unabashedly biased, but that is a whole other topic.

There is no place for advertising Other TV shows that the network may run in 6 months time, during a game. Getting the commentators to read or talk about a tv show is ludicrous.

They complain about the advertising revenue in the game, and how we should have extra breaks to allow extra adverts, yet they take up the space themselves with dribble about some reality TV shown the previous night.
  • washe Acrim? Waddyamean Washe?
  • Yeah Joel Thompson was spitting out blood before he even played the ball yet no penalty
