Could Benji be our new Jeff Robson?

BENJI Marshall’s price tag should go hand-in-hand with his rising form according to Billy Moore, while the Dragons lock down another piece of their 2018 roster.

BENJI NOW WORTH DOUBLE?

FORMER Queensland and North Sydney star Billy Moore reckons Benji Marshall’s value has doubled at Brisbane since he signed with the club on a modest $100,000 deal before the start of the season.

When given the opportunity to play NRL football, Marshall has shown glimpses of his best football this season, including in last week’s win over Canberra.

“If he can play, if he stays on the park, he’s worth at least double that,” Moore told Queenslanders Only.

“And I’d throw some bonuses in there as well.

“He probably won’t start when they have a new roster next year, but he’s a great fringe player. He’s there to teach.”

Both Marshall and the Broncos are keen to extend his stay at Red Hill into 2018, with the playmaker and Wayne Bennett talking through his options in recent weeks.

With Robson and Fogaty gone for next year, we will have Dragan moving into Wenty to work on his trade for an NRL start. However we will be short of a head to pair next to him in Wenty.

Now the question lies, if Dragan is ready to fill in next year that would be awesome. However we all know halves take time to develop. I think Robson was signed this year to be that experience / back up for NRL if Fog wasn't the man (as proven).

Given Benji would likely to want to play in NSW and develop his post football career in media, what would you feel if we can sign him on a top 25 contract for next year?

He can be a backup and a mentor for young Dragan.

    • Given he is on a mesely 100k at the moment, i would pay double that for someone with his football smarts. Plus he hasn't been one to be too injury prone. Something that could make him worth of a 2 + year contract?

    • Remember that a Broncos $100k is about $400k in NSW
  • i second this motion why are we always looking at new halves when we have needs in other departments like prop and to a small degree hooker i would not say we need a marquee hooker but a good back up and only that if cameron king does not prove himself in the next game

  • Did you forget we're releasing Semi?

You always need a senior backup half and I may be open to this. Sure you've got Gutho and Smith who can fill in at 5/8 but they're not really going to be playing halfback for Wenty to help develop a player like Dargan. It always helps if you can simply make a like for like change rather than move one player from another position and cause a reshuffle.

If Benji's going to come on a low price then I don't really see why not. It's pretty clear we're not chasing a hooker at the moment and our prop stocks are starting to fill when we've got a fully fit side: Kane Evans, Matagi, Mannah, Vave, Alvaro, Terepo, Brien. So you've got 7 Top 25 players there to fill 4 positions and we've already released Alex Twal to give him an opportunity elsewhere.

  • Haha, like what Browny said I think you need a new prescription for those angry pills.

I agree a marquee prop is on the top of our list, but who is on the market? There hasn't been that full player turnstile we expected with the announcement of the reduced cap for next year. We have Evans which is an addition but hardly a marquee.

As for a hooker, I think Liccha will fill IDG's top contract just fine if we land him for next year. I think we will be well served there.

But we have genuine vacant position with 2 down in our ressies next year. Moving Gutho in the halves is hardly ideal when needed.

So given your superior knowledge in the game, who would you choose to be wearing the Wenty 6 or 7 next year

  • Okay, some big boys available..... Dave Taylor, Zane Tetevano, Mose Masoe, Dave Tyrrell, Sam Mataora, Charlie Gubb, Eddy Pettybourne, Sam Tagataese as for hookers, Travis Waddell, Michael Lichaa, Nathan Peats($$$), Slade Griffin (better hooker than 2nd rower imo) Ray Thompson. So they are out there, question is will parra chase anyone?????

    • Dave Taylor's career has been as much a disappointment as Tim Smiths . That dickhead could've been one of the best the game has seen .
    • the majority of those you list are on the slide and have been for years - Masoe, MAtaora, Pettybourne and Tagatese should be looking for spots in the nursing home with poppa than for a start with the eels.

Taylor is an absolute waste of time, space and energy.

Tevetano hasnt looked like making anything of his career to date despite a number of opportunities.

Waddell has had big wraps for a while and hasnt played anything more than all stars games.

Ray Thompson is likely to retire with his dodgy knees, we dont another dropmough incident with that guy.

Admittedly dont know much about Griffin, but Peats and possibly Lichaa are the only ones you would consider...

We dont know need to go backwards in the roster just for the sake of filling it.

  • It's hard to rate any NZ props, feels like they are on the Fish and Chups diet.

  • ahahahahahahaha
