Sadly, I posted about Watson earlier in the year and mentioned we should be in talks with him.

It pisses me off that the Roosters have snapped him up on $300 000 a season (according to NRL 360) and took a pay cut in doing so.

Connor Watson is probably the best #14 in the game and worth a minimum of $500 000 a season, which leads me to my next question, why in earth didn't we sign him? He can cover at Lock, Hooker and anywhere across the backline.

This to me was a deadset no brainer and very very poor from the club in my opinion if we didn't sound Watson out in coming to Parramatta.

It also leads me to assume that there is unrest at Newcastle, if Ponga's best mate is leaving for less money, could it be that Ponga and others are unhappy too?

If so, what players would you be approaching from Newcastle if any? I'd take Barnett, Bradman Best and the Saifiti boys but all are tied into lengthy contracts, Ponga is locked in for next season but after that the next two seasons are in his favour.

If we had of signed Watson for $500 000 a season, it would of allowed us to make a decent play for Ponga who could have been the player we built this club around moving forward.

  • Taking less money to play for the Roosters. Sound familiar?

  • Yep a few on here said the same, chase Watson hard. There have been 4 or 5 good players come onto the market in the last 18mths, parra have only chased Staggs hard

I guess Brad thought he had a side good enough to play in the GF.

Adocar and Hynes should have been must signings for the Eels.

    • That's fair to say that Graham about Addo-Carr and Hynes but how would they go outside the Melbourne system?

      • Adocar,s main asset is his speed, wouldn't loose that and Hynes is a natural footy player with loads of ability.

Same could be said chasing Manu for a mill.would he fire at the Eels or are our systems that fucked under BA and his STAFF

The Eels have the structure to be a realy good side, they need a smarter coaching team and 2 or 3 champion players. We also need a true captain and leader.

I would let Gutho go and promote RCG and Reed as vice captain, will be our future leader.

        • Fair points Graham, maybe we should of been chasing Hynes to be our fullback at that price.

We do lack a good ball player in our team.

  • Even the Knights offer was $350k per season.

We should be trying to extend Mahoney long term with  a view to making him captain. Seems much more level headed than Man Bun. He is pretty calm, humble and speaks very well. Comes across as much more intelligent than Gutho who can't hold a conversation without trying to be funny.

  • Parra will sign nobody and just retain our 'stars'. Parra is after all a development club.

  • Ah, the Roosters with their magical stretchy salary cap!

And what a coincidence that every player that goes there wants to play for less!

Almost like it is too good to be true!

Boy, if only we could inspire that kind of passion in our players!

It's pretty useful to have a magical stretchy salary cap and to be able to convince a bunch of money hungry mercenaries that they actually don't want more money!

Why didn't we ever think of that?

  • 300 on the books

  • John, don't be under the illusion he is only on $300k. Its the Roosters, it might be 300k on the offical cap, but his TPA,s his Uncle Nics Car, His Uncle Nics investment unit that he gets cheap and can sell higher later, or his guaranteed ambassador role afterward his playing days or his paid mentoring role after footy, or his high priced car salesman job after footy.

He will get a lot more the 300k a year by the time it's over, It's the Roosters way, and why they get whom they want and always always for offical unders.

It really is time to get rid of the cap. It suits the teams with Big Business but the rest of the teams have to struggle. It is not an even playing field by any stretch.
