Concussion and compulsory head gear

ive never played league but that's probably because I'm not very athletically gifted.Anyway, watching every week of this year there appears to be a concussion concern of some sort. This poses a question I want to ask other 1eyed eels that's played the game, why do you choose not to wear head gear? I can imagine there's a reduced level of vision with one. However surely there's increase designs to minimise that. Also for players who have had a concussion during the game, why don't they make it mandatory to have them wear one when they return?Just a thought, as welfare of the players has to be the most important part of the game.

  • I use to wear it when I played. It was more a confidence thing. Knowing that I had a bit of extra protection on my head gave me the confidence to dig my head in going for tries. I got concussed once with head gear on so not sure how much protection they actually offer.
  • The head gear doesn't stop you from getting concussed as its the brain inside that gets whiplash against the skull so to speak.

THe head gear merely protects the skull. However, some protection is better than nothing. I never used head gear in the eighties and I was knocked out cold once. All I remember is being back in the stand with some injured players, saying I had a very good game.

    • Cheers makes sense
  •  Blue and Gold it is scientifically proven that head gears do not prevent concussion. Major studies in the USA have shown that their helmets do nothing to prevent concussion--that is the main reason the NFL is facing huge compensation payments outlays from former players who suffered concussion. Concussion is caused when the brain hit the bone of the skull. Head gear does not stop that. It seems an insoluble problem.

  • I tried wearing one once but I ended up constantly having to tighten it and readjust it fter every hit, made me all sweaty and just uncomfortable.

  • Headgear does nothing to stop concussion. A concussion is when your brain essentially rattles around in your skull. All headgear really does is prevent head cuts and soften some impacts. Given they reduce vision, move around and make you sweaty their cons outweigh the pros for me.
    • Super, this Lebanese teams going to know all about concussion after your finished with them.

      GO MALTA

  • Played 270 odd senior games of footy without headgear. Think I wore it twice was hot and uncomfortable
All research shows it makes no difference to concussion cause your brain still rattles around in your skull
Might save you from some stitches though.
