Clear bias

1. Annesley refused to be critical of referee Ashley Klein for allowing Kaufusi to stay on the field for his hit on Ryan Matterson, that resulted in the Parramatta forward suffering concussion / said he could understand why referee Ashley Klein didn’t send Kaufusi to the sin bin for an apparent forearm to Matterson’s head

2. Annesley said Nuikore should have been sin binned

"At an absolute minimum, the players (Brown and Nuikore) should have been sent to the sin bin because that then activates the potential for the 18th man.

...

"The incidents themselves, they should have been placed on report and sent to the sin bin. Sending off as the final step is also something that could have been considered.

"There would have been no complaints from anyone in this building [Rugby League Central] had they taken the option in one or both of the incidents."

https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/05/10/annesley-wants-more-alignment-from-officials-on-foul-play/

In both cases the player was penalised but stayed on the field. Only Nuikore had mitigating circumstances with Teddy falling into the tackle. Teddy was not hurt and had no HIA. Matterson was knocked out cold and had several weeks on the sidelines.

But only for the Parra player did Annesley sack the official and say that the offender should have been binned. Even the pro-Roosters/anti-EEls commentators said Nuikore's was a lower end offence.

Not a conspiracy theory

  • Kaufusi grubbed Matto, we all saw it , even my wife saw it..enuf said

Dylbags was lucky not to get binned, his time served should be sufficient

    Marata he lined Tedesco up...

I see this in every game every week, but of something here bit of something there, should have a footy player in the bunker too or one bunker judge to cover all games each week.

Televised each game so the Bunker Judge can remain in one spot the whole time , it's all happening in real time

    • Point is Annesley seems to treat teams differently. Refs are under pressure to treat teams differently. If an official does not sin bin or send off a player who fouls a Storm or Rooster player then (even though there was no injury or HIA) they will publically admonished and stood down. If they do not sin bin a a Storm or Rooster player for a similar offence that causes substantial injury and weeks on the sidelines they will receive support for their decision.

      • There's no conspiracy, this is just run of the mill NRL inconsistency. The NRL as an organisation run on knee-jerk reactions - they do one thing, get a reaction, and then overcompensate in another direction. It means that there is no week to week consistency and we get decisions that don't make sense in hindsight.

It's always been the case. Trying to compare one decision to the next (regardless of the team) will never make sense.

The stuff that happened with Brown was replayed over and over live on television and the commentators LOVE it when they get to call out the officials for making a mistake because it makes them sound smart so they harped on about, so the NRL knee-jerk reacted.

Same as when the media caught on to Billy and his knees - the NRL suddenly came down hard on something they'd been ignoring for years prior.

        • The Captain makes a good point. Spot on. The NRL constantly shifts and wriggles it’s way around its public relations. If the media blow up over something, or something looks unpalatable on TV, they react. They are a reactive organisation not a proactiive one, so the only thing consistent is the inconsistency.

          • Yes good point but does not change anything. It just moves the point of bias from Annesley to the media. It means that the teams who control the media control the judiciary and the refs and Annesley. Media have a vested interest in Storm and Roosters have heavy hitters that also can control media. Therefore Roosters and Storm can get blanket media coverage of their point-of-view/propaganda, this causes the NRL to be lenient on them and hard on their opposition. Uneven playing field as above.

            • I agree with that. But don't hate the player, hate the game.

If we want to be a long term successful club we need to control the media narrative as much as the Roosters or Storm seem to. Heck we have Sterlo front and centre, it's not like we don't have a foot in the door. If other clubs do something better than us, let's learn from it and lift our game. Media management is an area we need to improve.

              • Good point , agree

              • Yes I agree again. Media management we can really improve. On Peter  Sterling, I may be wrong here, but sometimes I get the feeling that in his efforts to appear neutral and not overtly Eels biased, he strays the other way, so as not to be accused of bias.

              • Well said cap

    • Marata didn't line Teddy up. He was aiming for the ball/ chest. Look at where Teddy's knees are before impact. 20 cms off the ground and he's not short!!!
