  • With lower grades cancelled I am struggling to see how the NRL continues to justify games being played. Your second tier comp is gone, therefore any team who has to call up a player from their feeder side is at a disadvantage as they won't have match fitness. The suspension is a matter of when not if.

    • Agree. Would have to organise mock games or play with ourselves

    • Super, It's about survival: biding as much time before it hits that iceberg, finding a solution, before the whole ship sinks.

Over $525m in annual expenses and only $135m net assets equals around three months. Massive shortfall. Not everyone aboard may make it.

Even if the game borrows to stay afloat and returns to normal next year, how long will it take to repay such a loan with say $28m-$30m surpluses per year as it did last year (that's about equal to the AFL's surplus, or a touch better, despite the AFL generating $300m more or so, in revenue)? It'll be in the red for some time.

      • As every business is going to be. There is no solution the NRL is going to find wherein the sport continues beyond the next month. New York has just moved to banning people from gathering in groups of more than. I reckon we are going to be locked down in the next couple of weeks and a high contact sport cannot function in that environment.

This situation all goes back to the 2016 decision to raid the Emergency Funds.

There are projections we are going to be in a rolling lockdown situation for up to 18 months as there will be no vaccine for at least 12 months.

        • Super, We'll see. Tentative vaccine testing has begun. Maybe we'll break records.

But, if it were an 18 month rolling lockdown as you suggested, Carona might end up far from our only, nor biggest, challenge.

This needs to be mitigated as soon as possible imo.

          • That's one of the problems HOE - not only do they have to come up with a vaccine that actually works, there is no possible way of speeding up the necessary clinical trials and research unless they want to start cutting corners - which would never happen.

I'd say mass distribution of a solid vaccine is at least 18 months away - probably longer.

In the meantime it's economic armageddon for all us :)

            • Chinese probably won't have too many issues with cutting corners test a vaccine on their population and if it works on 1bill Chinese, that'll probably be enough of a test for the rest of the world.

A coronavirus vaccine is being tested on humans. When will it be ready?

              • That's a good read - I still reckon 18 months - at best - assuming they're already well on the way..

    • This is a cost saving measure as much as a health concern. The 2nd Tier & under age competitions are loss makers, even playing behind closed doors the NRL can still generate enough revenue to keep everyone afloat.

  • The NRL will be suspended / cancelled. It's unavoidable and inevitable.
I appreciate the NRL fighting hard to save its business but it's kidding itself if it thinks it can avoid a shutdown.
