Carl Webb retires

Press release from the Parramatta Eels follows:

Pirtek Parramatta Eels forward Carl Webb has today announced his immediate retirement, calling time on an 11-year, 186-game first grade career.

The 30-year-old Queenslander began his career with Brisbane in 2000 and quickly established himself as one of the game’s feared enforcers.

His 12 memorable performances for Queensland led to a Test appearance for the Kangaroos in 2008, and he was selected in the Indigenous All Stars team which took out the inaugural Rugby League All Stars match in 2010.

Webb joined the Pirtek Eels from North Queensland at the beginning of this year and has appeared for the Eels in five matches this season.

Pirtek Eels coach Stephen Kearney said:

“We’ve been lucky to have a player of Carl’s experience in our squad,” Kearney said.

“He has had a terrific career – his performances over the years, particularly at representative level, are ones I won’t forget.

“Carl’s had a tough time with injuries this year but although he hasn’t spent a lot of time on the field, he’s been invaluable when it comes to helping out our younger forwards.”

“We want to wish him all the best for life after footy and congratulate him on everything he’s achieved in his career.”

  • Maybe Carl is making room for the mystery signing?
    Whose exit is next?
  • Good news. Just not fit enough
    • Good luck to him, tried hard just too many injuries.A shame we didnt get him 5 years ago.

  • I think that we may see a few more "retirements" before the end of the year.
  • Well does this surprise anyone now wait for Justin Poores announcement!
  • So we signed Walker, Webb, Hicks & Fats.
So Hicks is next? Does he know that?
    • I don't think Hicks is contracted for next year.

Would I be right in saying that Webb was the only old fart on a 2 yr deal
  • How is our top 25 looking now?

or should I say top 20? hehe

    • it bemuses me how half of our signings for 2011 have now retired whatuira webb walker and maybe mcguire and hicks now. I think Webb was pressured to retire as being on a 2 year deal and trying to fit in Willie.
  • Yep, Hicks was definitely a one-year deal. There was an option on Chris Walker's contract.
