Can we afford to purchase another top 25 player?

I'll be brief with this. The answer is a definite yes.Towards the end of the season we were prepared to offer Hoppa a compromise deal of around $500K.We now know that the $800K per annum is, at least in major part, now available to our cap.We had covered the contract of the big 3 through the departures of Sandow, Lussick, Matterson and Champion.Since then we've had the departures of Robinson and Seffa and the downsizing of Morgan's contract. The majority of the other new contracts are smart, cheap one year or second tier signings. (I believe that young Honeti Tuha from Newcastle should soon be added on a second tier deal).By my reckoning we have funds available and making a play for a player like Dylan Walker would not be out of the question.I reckon we should keep a close eye on how things play out there. A spot would certainly be available.

  • Just heard the Farrell thing has fallen through, this mean we passed on him because we have someone else in the pipeline???

  • Do you consider Gordon as the third member of the big three?
    • Yes - as the third highest paid recruit for this year.
  • I'd hope some of the money goes to upgrading semi and Paulo
    • It's in the plans.
  • Was just about to ask, re: our top 25, who is in and who is not? There doesn't seem to be a clear way of knowing or finding out? It's the highest 25 paid players is that correct? A case in point is Bevan French, did we sign him to a top 25 deal with a bit more $$ to keep him here, or is he still on a NYC contract? Furthermore, we probably need a fullback in the squad to cover Gordon if we have an injury? Would be interested to know which out of Schulte, Cornish, Hasson are on a top 25 contract (if any).

But yeah agree, would be great if we picked up another player, preferably a centre, but I honestly wouldn't mind another gun forward, we have Junior, but we possibly need another real good player there somewhere.

    • As I understand it, it is the top 25 highest paid players.
    • It is my understanding that the Top 25 is a dynamic concept and as such clubs guard the important details driving it carefully. I say dynamic because the list that is published at the beginning of the year in the season guide is truly only a provisional list of highest 25 salaried players before any incentives/bonuses and possibly match payments kick in to shake up the list. As the season wears on and players hit contract KPIs or achieve rep bonuses they can piggy back other players in the Top 25 and thus impact player availability on a weekly basis.

    • Combined, I'd say in the vicinity of $1.7 to $1.8 million.
