Hi guys , so im reading the paper article about Anthony Watmough , And cant get my head around the fact that it say we are under immense cap issues which my result in us getting him for four years !

"

However, Parramatta have been under immense salary cap pressure and will struggle to contribute a significant sum toward Watmough’s contract next year. It’s understood the total payout from Manly could go as high as $350,000 — still leaving the NSW Origin back rower $620,000 short on what he stands to earn on the Northern Beaches in 2015.

Even with a raft of third party deals, Parramatta are no chance of making up the shortfall. The alternative is to back-end the difference across the remaining seasons of Watmough’s new Eels contract, which could now be as long as four years.

How can this be possible giving all the guys we have lost and the losers we have gained ?

2015 Gains: Beau Champion (South Sydney Rabbitohs, 2015), Ben Crooks (Hull FC, 2016), Isaac De Gois (Mid Season: Cronulla Sharks, 2016), Shannan McPherson (Salford Red Devils, 2015), Cody Nelson (Gold Coast Titans, 2016)
2015 Losses: Liam Foran (London Broncos), Daniel Harrison (London Broncos), Jacob Loko (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs), Brenden Santi (Wests Tigers), Ken Sio (Hull Kingston Rovers), Ben Smith (retired), Kelepi Tanginoa (North Queensland Cowboys), Willie Tonga (Catalan Dragons)Re-Signed: Kenny Edwards (2017), David Gower (2016), Manu Ma'u (2017), Tim Mannah (2017), Tepai Moeroa (2017), Semi Radradra (2018), Vai Toutai (2017)

  • We can fit him in, whoever has written this hasn't really taken a good look at our recent recruitment/retention. This season we will have been paying out $750K to players no longer at the club. That figure drops to almost 0 next season given the majority of contracts finish this year. As they've said, we can backend the contract so we pay him more a few years from now. A lot of this stuff is pure speculation though. No one has any real idea how much we can get through third party deals. I'm pretty sure that Watmough would not have been earning $950K next season under the salary cap.

    • thanks supereel , I havent been reading much mate due to work , just didn't make sense to me that's all , thanks for your information..

  • that's why I asked for advise from someone with a little more wisdom because I haven't read much nor been on the site for a while , thanks for the pointless reply and comment brett ..

  • I think a few unders 20s will be replacing those who have left.
  • 1) Some players we have were on back-ended contracts; 2) players like Tepai, Semi, Edwards, Mau and probably Junior have all likely stepped up out of second-tier contracts to Top 25 contracts following upgrades, so they are essentially the same as new signings.

So you have to look at it from a Top 25 basis (and I'll try and keep as like-for-like as possible)

Out: Harrison (Edwards), Loko (Moeroa), Santi (Toutai), Sio (Radradra), Smith (Mau), Tonga (Champion), Tanginoa (De Gois maybe?), Moimoi (Watmough).

So you can see here, we haven't lost a lot more than we gained. it's pretty like-for-like and then your looking towards how much of the payments to non-contracted players counter-act your upgrades to the likes of Gower/Mannah/etc plus your back-ended contracts.

I'd suggest how easily we fit Watmough into next year's roster will depend on whether Allgood/Paulo are with us next year.  From what I understood a couple of months back, we pretty much had room for one to two NRL signings. We got Champion and then I think when it started becoming a stronger chance we might get Watmough that's when they decided to let Tanginoa and Allgood explore other options.

    • Watmough signed with the eels 3 months ago for 2015. Allgood is on his way out. You missed kelly and api from the list. Also cap is larger in 2015 and we get renis blairs horros and a few other players money which i reckon is about 500k back into out cap. So watmough would be easily fitted in with the other signings. I am expecting another signing before 2015
    • thank a lot for that , best explanation I got on here , when you put it like that it makes more sense ..

  • I won't be stunned if there is still a bit of business to be done. As we've both said, Allgood's future is probably just a matter of him finding another club for similar money and he's a decent young prop so that shouldn't be too difficult. Wouldn't surprise me either if Justin Hunt tried his luck somewhere else either.

Half is the obvious area where there could be movement depending on Kelly where there are conflicting reports on his future.
