Cameron Smith cops one-match suspension

Cameron Smith will sit out this week's clash with Manly after pleading guilty to a dangerous contact charge over his tackle on Kevin Proctor on Saturday night.

The Storm skipper was handed a grade-two dangerous contact charge by the NRL match review committee on Sunday for the incident in Melbourne's comeback win over Gold Coast at Suncorp Stadium.

If he challenged the charge at the judiciary he risked a two-match ban.

Smith was one of seven players charged for incidents from the three Saturday matches.

Per NRL.com

About time Smith gone done for stunts like these. He's one of the dirtiest and most cowardly of players when it comes to attacking defenceless opponents.

  • Seriously.... 1.how could the ref have avoided seeing this and not blown an immediate penalty and placed him on report!?  Surely that showed the refs fear of the untouchable one?

    2. How was this deliberate and intentional pig of an Act only be ONE week!?

GC were very hard done by and were galant in that defeat and this episode contributed strongly to their loss leaving them without Proctor.

    • Well there's no rule for the referees to enforce in this situation. The MRP charged him with Dangerous Contact.

      • Super why wouldnt the ref have deemed this to be an intentional case of Smith yet again placing a player in a dangerous position.... right there  it was an out and out penalty and that moment where the ref just allowed play on he DID allow smith the right to  put the game in disrepute. How do you think that looked? Care about player safety my arse...depends on who.

  • Agreed I was furious he got away with that Scott seward free! It was shit...it was so obviously intentional in context with just enough of a twist ...scum bag. The bench was furious and rightly so.

ps the commentator mentioned how angry one of the GC staff were and that he had worked with the storm previously for years and knows exactly their M.O...such a grub knows all the tricks of the trade.

  • what about in the dying minutes of the storm v gc coast where one of the storm players was  sent off for repeat offence!? What about captain grubs form with what went down there...seems like he is starting to be open about his control of matches these days...I would’ve sent him off there just for being the big headed dick he is!

    • He questions decision close to the line, he walks off slowly when sent to the bin, they lay on you for the first & fourth tackle mix it up a bit. All that is controlling the game & he being doing it for years. I believe coaches that are involved with the refs are pointing this out to them. NRL wouldn't have a clue, because they are useless.
  • In the heat of the moment those things are inevitable in rugby league. When you play it it from a specific angle and in slow motion it makes it out to be worse than it actually is.

It reminds me of 09 when hayne was charged for that penalty try but because it was in slow motion it looked 100x worse than what actually happened
  • It looked bad, but there's no rule saying a referee can penalise a player because a tackle looks bad. As for the "dangerous position", that only relates to a player's legs going above the horizontal and that didn't happen. The MRP have done the right thing in regards to charging him and I don't think the referees have done anything wrong in this case. If they penalised Smith then and there they'd be penalising every third tackle where a third tackler grabs a leg.
