If history has taught us anything, its not to count the proverbial chickens! When Parra made it first grand final in 1976, the club took the extraordinary step of giving the players a street parade prior to the game while Manly took the low key approach. We lost!
Forgive the secondary hearsay, and I'm not suggesting the following to be undisputed fact, but a tradesman who attended my house in 2002 turned out to be an ex Parra player. He indicated to me that on the eve of the 2001 GF, he spoke to Nathan Cayless who basically said victory was "in the bag" and "all they needed to do was show up" to taste victory. Painfully, we all know what happened.
St George have been pilloried by the media and opposition fans for being cocky - and we saw a perfect example of it with the Darius Boyd interview. Since then, they've played like a bag of shit!
I say we enjoy the roll we're on. Enjoy the football the team is producing and share in the excitement which the players. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. I am suspersticious and I genuinely believe that if we keep our heads down and cut out the chest beating now, we'll be more than justified in doing so on the first Sunday in October!
For the sake of the argument, if we make it to the GF and win it, we will have to beat the current winning record to win the GF. It was 12 straight set by Souths in the early days when they went the season undefeated! i'd love it to happen but it is one big ask!
One thing we can be sure of this year is our coach. He will remember the 02 GF coaching the Warriors and his time at St Helens. If our mob make the GF, he will not let a "we will win for sure" attitude creep in. Either will Hindy, Burt or Cayless. None of those blokes are stupid, and will have learnt from past mistakes. If we make it, the best team on the day will win. Same goes with the rest of this year.
I actually read Phil's GF blog as a hypothetical thus i treated it that way. Most probably have, but there is no harm in dreaming.
Now, if the team was thinking ahead to the grand final then I'd be worried - but I see no problem in getting excited as a group of supporters that we could win this thing.
I thought we could win it five weeks ago, so I'm hardly going to go all conservative now.
