I know little about cars.... but know that my SSV chews well over the $200 a week. So after a a fun 3 1/2 years I'm ending the marriage and buuying a sensible small family car.
Thing is I don't know what to buy.
I am looking at 40 -45 k mark (either brand new or something something very young)... don't want an SUV, or Falcon/Commodre size car.
I'm after something like a Mazda 6 size car....
Petrol consumption must be under 10L/100 kms
any thoughts or advice welcome.

Last year we bought a small car for the missus. Test drove Barina, Fiesta, Rio, Yuckis and the Mazda 2. Other than the Fiesta which we bought, the Mazda beat them all by heaps.
A work colleague has a Mazda 6 and loves it.
Another work mate has a Subaru Liberty and loves it. A bit more sporty than the Mazda which would be good coming from the SSV.
Honda's are pretty good too but servicing is the killer.
Personally if I was after one, it would be the Subaru.
I still get 600km out of a tank in my 2000 VT Commodore
Mazda 6 is what I'm thinking....
Honda's I don't like and the Suburu is a maybe.
Will go shopping on the weekend.
Probably keep in mind when each manufacturer has a new model being released, you get bargains on the last of the previous model. Usually end of financial year and before xmas are the best times.
Or if you are a member of a union, go to unionshopper.
If the car hasn't been bought yet, I would highly recommend Volkswagon, or even an Audi/Mercedes/BMW... You will not find a better built car than German cars...
Having worked in the motor industry for a while, you cant really go wrong. However, my best advice however is that, what is good for some isnt good for another, so get your short list out, narrow it down to 2 or 3 maximum, take each one for a drive. Dont even talk price till youve decided which car is the right car for you.
Thats is what I will be replacing my SS VE with very soon.
Good value for money in my opinion... subaru was good too.
