Burt signs for two more years (Updated)

UPDATED: As predicted, Burt agreed to a two-year contract which according to the club will make him an "Eel for life". Eels announcement has been added to the comments below.

The Parramatta Eels are expected to formally announce a new contract with club favourite Luke Burt today.

The Eels will be holding a media conference this afternoon where they will "make an announcement regarding the future of club stalwart Luke Burt".

Burt's signature has not been formally announced although it was reported earlier this year that both he and Fuifui Moimoi had agreed to two-year extensions.

Burt will play his 200th game for the club this weekend against Manly on his home ground of Parramatta Stadium.

  • Is that he and Fui?
  • Yep
  • That is great news, I would hate to see Burt play for another club. He has been a great club man for a long time, and also very underrated.
  • Burt"s a champion. Very under-rated. Our most consistant back. Good stuff Burty!
  • Burty is a bloody legend, he always puts in 110% and he never gets that much of a rap, he is by far one of my favouriate players, I hope he retires in parra and gets a premiership under his belt he deserves it just as much as Hindy.
  • Great replies guys...... Luke Burt is a legend!! A great club man ...still has the moves, the pace, the composure he is a great finisher and most of all He as does Hindy & Caylo bleed Blue & Gold!
  • This is the best news ever! But at the risk of playing devil's advocate - are we at risk of tying up all these Eels stalwarts and missing out on the next generation of players? I hate to say this - but Fui, Cayless, Burt, Hindmarsh etc are all in their 30s.... And league's fast becoming a young man's game. I think sometimes it might be better to let a few go and take the money and the easy life over in the English super league... Sadly, these days, clubs stalwarts don't amount to premierships. But that said, i couldn't bare to watch a guy like Hindmarsh play for anyone else. Even the Bradford Bulls.
  • I know what you are saying, but we have a young halves pairing. Our 6 & 7 need experience around them for at least 2010 and probably 2011/12 as well.
  • Burt an Eel for life (announcement made) sorry - didnt want to start a new post

PIRTEK Eels winger Luke Burt, who plays his 200th first grade match against Manly at Parramatta Stadium this Sunday, has celebrated the occasion by signing a new two-year deal with the club.

The 28-year-old from Redhead Beach near Newcastle, who is the highest point-scorer remaining in the NRL with 1348 points, has agreed to extend his commitment to the Eels to the end of the 2012 season.

His debut match was as a 17-year-old off the bench in the rugby league's first night at the Olympic Stadium, the double header of 1999 when the Eels beat St George Illawarra. Now a father of two, this Sunday the club will honour his double-century milestone by branding it Luke Burt Family Day and allowing children to onto the playing field after the match.

"I really didn't want to ever play for any other clu b so I'm relieved and really excited that it has all been sorted out," said Burt. "It's also an honour to achieve 200 games in first grade for the one club and I just hope I can celebrate with a victory."

Eels coach Daniel Anderson, who was at the helm of the Eels reserve grade in 1998 when Luke was elevated from junior reps mid-season having just past his 17th birthday, described Burt as, "a complete professional throughout his whole career". "He's a natural rugby league footballer who showed tremendous skills and maturity when he came through the ranks and to celebrate 200 games is a worthy milestone for him. His team-mates know he is a player they can count on and he is a highly respected leader around this club."

While he has not achieved the representative status of his fellow double-centurions and close mates Nathan Hindmarsh and Nathan Cayless - who last weekend played their 200th first grade match together - Burt personifies what the Pirtek Eels are all about, said CEO Paul Osborne. "He's been a wonderful player and role model; the type of person we want at our club," said Osborne. "When I first arrived at the club there was some talk around that he wasn't part of our plans in the future. But what I saw last year from him showed he is one of our best players and his professional attitude this season has further proved that. It's great that he has committed to the Eels for life."
