The newspaper media this morning is all about the Broncos coming in late to secure Jack Bird from the jaws of Newcastle, Wests, Cronulla and possibly the Storm. The Sydney Morning Herald has Bird saying he wants to be coached by Bennett !! Now where have we heard that excuse before? It`s an oldy but a goody, going back to the times of Wally Lewis at Brisbane. Then, they had the virtual State Of Origin team playing for the Broncos. When asked how they could fit all those players under the salary cap , they said they paid the players less money because the players wanted to be coached by Bennett! That, of course,was fantasy. It brought in the era of the brown paper bag. No doubt Bird will sign for about $ 500,000 after being offered at least $900,000 by the Eels and Newcastle etc. Believe that as you may, but you can be sure that the brown paper bag, or its modern equivalent ,will come into play, satisfying Bird`s bank account.
