Brian Smith to the Rescue (in England)

Brian Smith has long been regarded as the go to man to clean out a club, set up systems and improve performances. His long term value as a coach has been debatable, but his ability to turn a club around in the short term cannot be denied. Now the Wakefield Wildcats, sitting a long last in the Super League, have called on Smith's services. With a few ex- NRL players in their squad, including Tim Smith and Matt Ryan, there will be some familiarity for Smith to work with.At this stage of the season, being brought in on a rescue mission by the cellar dwellers will be a tall order. Still, I'll watch his progress with interest.

  • I thought the same thing when he signed on. Wouldn't really be a surprise if he dragged them off the bottom of the table.

  • Ive got a huge amount of respect for Brian as a coach, the 2nd best coach the clubs ever had imo, good luck to him at the wildcats.

  • I now have an English league team to follow.
  • Mick Cronin number 1 kram lol

  • Peard, Cronin, Kearney, Hagan, Stuart, BA - plenty to choose from lol

    & for the record

    1. Gibson

    2. Fearnley

    3. Smith

    4. Ken Kearney

    5. Provan

  • This mite surprise some people on he but I agree with snake hes the 2rd best coach we had I and I think if we still had him we would of won a least won 4 grand finals now

  • Smith was here 2 years too long.... In saying that he really did turn this club around... However it only took Hagan one season to undo the 10 years of work Smith did.

Michael Hagan, the biggest myth of a coach in RL history

    • Yep
    • He did take us to a preliminary final. Can thank the cap cheats and a poor video ref decision in the final 10 that cost us some gf glory.
  • He could make some players. He could break some. His text messages were the stuff of legends. I rated him but he stayed far too long. In the end I thought he was doing more harm than good. You can't deny the success of his early years at the club, but he had the capacity to release talent.
