Parramatta Eels forward Wiremu Greig is reportedly closing on signing a three-year contract extension with the club.
Greig, who moved out of the North Queensland Cowboys' development system to Parramatta in 2021, made his debut that year and has now gone on to play 13 matches.
Concerns over his fitness left him with just three appearances over the past two seasons, but he has quickly become a permanent part of Parramatta's top side in 2023, playing in 11 games todate, with five of them coming in the starting side.
Arguably his best performance of the season to date came in a 134-metre effort - during the first game without Campbell-Gillard - against the Knights in Round 9.
It appears his good form hasn't gone unnoticed with the Parramatta brass, who are reportedly set to lock him up on a three year contract extension according to Wide World of Sports that would keep him at the club until at least 2026.
A representative for the Maori All Stars, Greig came into the Cowboys' system with big raps after his performances in New Zealand junior rugby league, although never broke through for a debut in Townsville.
Now at 23 years of age, Greig has found another level, and the signs are there that he will only continue to improve.
Parramatta's retention and recruitment team clearly see it the following way, wanting to secure him to a long-term deal where he will continue to work with a middle third that includes Campbell-Gillard, Junior Paulo and J'maine Hopgood, with all three locked in until at least the end of 2025 - 2026 in Paulo's case.
Parramatta also have long-term deals signed with Shaun Lane (2025) and Ryan Matterson (2025) in the forwards

Him, hopgood, carty, hands have all been positives for us this year
And Greig, Hopgood and Hands are all young. Throw in Penisini, Dylan Brown and possibly even Russell and Dunster and we have a core of the squad that could stick around for years playing together.
Combine these guys with the kids coming up through the juniors and we could have a great mix of experience and young gun talent ala the Panthers if we play our cards right and don't hang onto our aging players too long (which means we have to be brutal when moving players on if they are on the decline).

Between now and 2025/6 some guys will extend.
We have about 15 first graders signed up long term which is awesome, you need to fill out the 30 with value so atleast 5 of our young guns will come into the 30 in 2025.

Only if we let it happen. Reality is RCG and Paulo could well be past their prime by 2026 as they edge into their 30s and as we see how they perform over the rest of this season and next we can decide to extend Greig before his contract is up. Then we let Paulo and RCG retire or go back to the bench on a year by year contract with Greig filling one of their starting spots.
However if we let all of their contracts expire at the same time again, yes we are morons.
Good move ... he's getting noticed. Wonder what he'll get paid.
I've really liked him the last few weeks. Runs hard, hits hard and doesn't give up trying to scramble in defence. He has been our best prop since RCG went down. Paulo hasn't invested in this season yet.
Been playing well getting better with every game!
35 minutes is a good improvement. Hope he continues to improve still young for a prop
