Brad Arthur Support and Belittling

So i have been on record on saying i am not a BA supporter, i am one to give credit where it is due. I believe he can coach, though in a role of making a team relevant and competitve i.e. perfect for Canterbury, Brisbane or North Queensland at this point. Though coming to getting a team to an elite standard he cannot do, therefore that is the reason being that i do want him gone for 2021. This has nothing to do with him as a person, met him twice and been nothing but a gentleman, though i expect excellence as all fans in every club does and i feel after 7 years of not getting to prelim, what makes anyone think he can do more in two years with the same roster moving forward as most of his 17 is signed til 2022.

He is not completely the issue at Parramatta, the players have let him down at points, though i think its best for this roster and himself to move on to avenues. For him to move on and refresh himself as a coach in new surroundings and this roster to have a new voice with different ideas, with 1 finals win in 6 appearances and first coach in NRL history to miss a prelim spot in 7 straight years at a club including two top 4 finishes leading to not getting close to a prelim, something is missing. The issues on defence through the year was not addressed for a few months, there was glimpses of our form depleating and yet kept grinding and playing the way we normally do, hit St. George Illawarra in RD 14, lose in humiliating fashion, back up to a 14-0 win to a Melbourne lineup with there stars out then a 38-0 thumping of Souths. RD 8 was the last time we looked convincing as a top 4 team, then we saw in small glimpses against Souths and Melbourne in the semis. This is his roster, and it is still not good enough, Moses has gone backwards where is the coaching on a player that was Dally M Halfback of the year? Some coaches are just suited to being club builders, Nathan Brown a prime example. Did a decent job at St. George until it got to the point where the roster he created was great but he just didnt have what it took to get them further, in comes Bennett and two minor premierships and a premiership later the club saw success with a big chunk of that roster. We have the roster, add in accountability, development and different voices and they can move further.

The SMH article was spot on towards Arthur, though Paul Crawley wrote that Arthur should be commended for his work since 2018, which i agree he did a good job in that moment, though it is getting to the stage where we are in the small window that every team gets into a somepoint where they have a capable and talented roster to contend for a title until the salary cap takes over and leads to rebuilding. Arthur is not the coach for that where is a coach like a Bennett or a Robinson for example can get us there or close to it. Crawley also stated however that he should overhaul the roster, ok now here is the problem, why should a coach overhaul a roster that he built himself? Anyone else see an issue in that statement, if a coach has to overhaul or make big changes to a roster when the majority of that roster has re-signed then that is on the coach, if he has not got his roster after 7 years then another 2 wont be enough either. That is where i see Arthur as a coach that is becoming stale at a club he has been comfortable in for a while.

As for who should take over? well in my opinion it doesn't matter as if his replacement doesn't win a comp they'll still have the same amount of titles as BA would've if he stayed another five years anyway. Though there are options, Bennett will be on look out and believe it's not out of the rhelm of possibility, Green would certainly put his hand up if it was available (though way he left NQ left a bad taste for me), Flanagan in 2022, or one who i really like that is under the radar is Cameron Ciraldo from Penrith. I would be fine with any of these, but if BA sees out his deal it'll be irrelevant as all these names will be gone or disinterested anyway. If Arthur, and its more than likely, leads us into 2021 as an Eels fan i'll hope for the best. If he leads us to new heights i will give credit where it is due, like in 2019 after wanting his head in 2018. Though i would be more encouraged at least if he cleans out the coaching room and brings in new assistants, re-invent the voices and messages going out to this team. It is a risk but then again it may give Arthur a guarenteed 2022 year, then keeping what he has and doing the same or worse being sent packing into 2021. And finally, for those who say real fans do not bad mouth their own team, all ill say is this. A true fans recognises the flaws of their team and demands change or improvement not because they can or they want to run the team or to be negative, they do it because they want to see success and a fan who wants success is a fan.

Though i am frustrated i am still an Eels fan regardless, if going to every home game in 2012 and 2013 didnt deter me away from them nothing will. What is everyone's thoughts on the situation, the article and the season past and going further, hope people agree, if you do not then that is fine also, one thing we have in common is being an Eels fans, wanting success whether it is thinking what we have now will do it or we need changes to do it and being in pain over having the image of Moses pointing to the posts on Saturday night.

  • Nice blog mate, well thought out, Flanno for mine.

    • Yeah Snake, i would like Flanno also. My brother knows Brayden Wiliame from St. George and he said he hated Flanno but loved Mary who is a player person.

Which shows how flanno is perfect for Parramatta, hard task master and is accountable on actions of his team. If the players dont like it then they are not the players for us.

        • You look at Benji on Maguire, he loved the hard nosed approach, Flanagan has won a title and so has Green and Maguire, so it can work. Who's to say it cant for this group.

        • I just want a coach who can get the job done at the pointy end of the season.

    • flannos gone backwards he did help the dragons if he was that good they would of made  the 8

  • Nice blog. Well thought out.

  • Flanagan should never coach again after overseeing peptides program and salary cap cheating. Big no. We came third ffs and yes we bowed out in semis but losing to melbourne is no shame and losing to Souths given the disruption to backline is understandable. Moses was obviously still bothered by injury. Our problem was our bench was weak and when our starters went off we lost momentum and couldn't get it back.

  • LOL @"same roster" we just punted ELEVEN players and will most likely lose the 12 th In Jennings.

  • I think there is no doubts Brad ARTHUR will be coaching Eels in 2021, not sure about 2022.

So we need to recruit smart, that includes coaches assistants.

  • Echo well thought out for sure.

A couple of things with regards to the 7 years bit and the message getting tired I don't know how can that be because of the turnover of talent within that time.So the message could be new for alot. The hard work roll your sleeves up mentality of the coach is what you stand for who you are and is basically your identity.

I think we can all agree that BA needs more qualified assistants coaches no argument there.

The biggest improvement for the team is in the small areas errors and game management this is tied into thee above having better guys taking care of the crucial part of your team the spine.

For me I'd like to see what it looks like with better assistants around BA before punting him.We aren't as far away as some of these blogs are speculating. We just need improvement in given areas that'll put this team over the top.
