  • to say they never wanted to win the comp is ludicrous,  of course they wanted to win the comp but they weren't prepared to make sacrifices to do it or didn't know they had to make sacrifices which is a bi product of bad coaching and leadership.

  • Gutherson's capacity should have been stripped after he shredded this club on the contract negotiation front. I've never seen a player more obsessed with money and willing to destroy the club’s culture over it.

Gutherson is a fuck witt without a shadow of doubt.

People saying that Eels fans should stand and applaud when Gutherson runs out at Commbank early in 25 can go and f themselves.   He should be bood from pillar to post every time he touches the ball

Sure he's a competitor, there's no argument there, but the way he treated this club in every contract negotiation is unlike any player had done previously,  let alone a captain who should drive culture.

There's no doubting his decisions filtered through other players.  It was a money first culture before Ryles arrived

    • This,

and Moses shouldn't be excused either , I know now he's the golden haired boy as he stood up when given his opportunity to achieve his own personal goals of doing good on the origin arena , but he's fucking choked and underperformed plenty when we've needed him and also fucked the club around with his money hungry behavior, he's pushing 30 and we are only now really seeing some hopeful signs he may go that next level if he ever gets on the paddock for Parramatta. Gutherson AND Moses have contributed to this self centered culture we have in our team. With Gutherson gone maybe Mitch can stop worrying about how much of the cap will be available to top him up every other year .

    • Agree chief, yes Gutho emptied the tank but that's make him a great leader - he definitely set a poor example especially  during contract negotiations, won't forget the spray he gave opacic, unbelievable in fact. BA thought Gutho was the right fit he definitely isn't captain material let alone club captain - Gutho is a serviceable fullback, failed at origin level and exposed in that arena he isn't elite yet BA and club put him on a pedestal.

  • I loved Gutho, he attempted to lead men with a follow my fitness, never give up attitude, that gave his all on the field.

Problem was to me, was that he was not as gifted in the ball playing or speed department like other elite fullbacks. He chased the big dollars to the detriment of the team and the club, his management used every avenue to squeeze and squeeze the club during negotiations, paving the way for others to do exactly the same. This was not the culture we were striving for. It came across as money money money, show me the money. Right down to walking out on the club and team mates that gave him the captaincy with a year to run on his $900k contract.

Hard for men to follow a leader like that, and it showed in the end.

    • Absolutely blue eel, and we can't separate Gutherson from his management either.  They negotiated as one, and Gutherson had every opportunity to tell his management that he didn't want his negotiations played out in the media.

Also,  Gutherson had every opportunity to fire Sam Ayub after he called Parramatta an embarrassment after not bowing to his insisted monetary value.

Gutherson should be wiped from the history of this club.  Thank God Ryles saw straight through his deception and wanted nothing to do with any further negotiations here.

    • I wouldn't he say he walked out on the club. The club said hey this will be your last year unless you find something better, he did and both parties agreed to go elsewhere. He took it incase of injury causing him to not get a good deal. His Dragons deal is a great deal for him.

If Ryles wanted to keep him and didn't sign Iongi, he then signed with Dragons then he walked out on them.

      • Please LB. Facts are Facts. 1 full season on his contract at around the $900k mark, Ryles identifys his lack of ball playing skills and lack of speed, he goes out of his way to create a position in the first 17 for him. A new playing on the ball role probably wearing the Locks jersey.

Mark O'Neill comes out in an offical Eels Statement and says we will do evrything possible to keep Gutherson here from 2026 onwards.

Eels put him in all the offical Calenders and merch for 2025.

Gutho gets his manager to shop him around , he quickly throws the towel in , dosnt back himself , throws away the support of Eels fans and takes the selfish path and leaves with a year to go.

That to me is a walk out. Couldnt be any simplier. Not really the culture we are looking or striving for in our leaders.

        • It was reported they won't offer him a deal until a bit into 2025, plus he was not going to play Fullback. He would want to play Fullback. He got similar money and 3 years at St. George.

So if a team offers him a Fullback role and we say you'll be a bench player, what is he going to prefer? It will be like saying you are manager at a job, they say you're getting old now and we want you a little longer but only as an assistant manager or you can find something if you want. Where another mob come in and say we want you as manager, which you gonna pick? 9/10 would go for manager unless they don't like the role, Gutho loves Fullback.

Of course MON said that, most GM's would to avoid fan backlash before it happened. Plus I do not really reckon Ryles was hell bent on having Gutho play that Lock role, he bought Iongi and had to justify it. If Gutho stayed he would have been 14 and filled in as he went.

It is simple but you are making it more complicated than what it is. It's either fans saying Parra got rid of him or fans saying Gutho walked out, could it be that it is both? Parra leaned towards not wanting him yet we're fine letting him see out his deal and he wouldn't mind staying but got a better option for the future not risking serious injury and took it.

Its bitterness either side where is I feel it was right call from both parties. If Gutho has a great year, so be it, we needed a change.

          • Of course he picked a better option for himself, and in doing so walked out on us. Thats just not complicated,

nor is it the culture we are trying to develop. Sure he was everything right about the club, but he was also a lot of wrong things  for the club.

Is it really both the club and the player. Perhaps, but 1 thing is for certain Gutho had a contract and could of stayed,  shown leadership, played his heart out and earnt his new position going forward and then organise his future contract. Our Captain decided not to, and decided to leave. Still not complicated
