CLINT Gutherson’s new deal with Parramatta could be worth a staggering $2.3 million over three years.
The player known as “King Gutho’’ is in line for a bonus that when added will earn him $750,000 a season.
Despite claims that the Eels stood their ground in the protracted contract negotiations and had a player recruitment victory by signing Gutherson for $650,000 a season, a series of sweeteners made the Eels pay the fullback’s asking price.
On top of an upgraded deal for the remainder of this season, Gutherson was paid a $50,000 signing bonus, will be a given a car and is in line to receive an extra $350,000 in State of Origin bonuses.
In contention to be selected for NSW later this month with the Blues in the middle of an injury crisis, Gutherson has an Origin clause that will increase his contract by $50,000 a year should he be picked by the Blues.
Gutherson is also eligible for the $50,000-a-year Blues bonus in 2020, 2021, and 2022 in a coup that would make him a $750,000 player.
The Sunday Telegraph understands what is quite possibly the most talked about deal since the Super League wars is almost identical to the offer Gutherson’s management put to the Eels late last year.

Good work by the club. The way Freddie is talking he has no intention of picking Gutho, so he won’t earn those bonuses.

Furthermore, even if he is selected by NSW, those bonuses won’t count against the cap until next season
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about those bonuses. Won't be playing origin anytime soon.
We did well adding 200k to our original offer and beating out the zero other clubs offering over $450k.
In all seriousness though, he means more and is worth more to us than any other club because of the absolute neglect of BA to develop any other leaders capable of being the alpha of the team. We did the right thing in upping his deal but now we have 3 seasons to get our shit together on that front so we can accurately pay Clint his true on field worth at that time. Given BA is locked in for 2 of them its more like 1 year to get it right. BA is more concerned with getting a team to put in any effort under him.

Gutherson is a good player but he no state player not unless half of NSW side gets the chicken spots or something

Are you guys kidding me? Blind Freddy can see the Gutherson signing was a must, We would have lost to the Dragons & not scored anywhere near as many as we did against the tigers if not for him. Whatever we paid for him, he was worth it. He’s just got a shit mentally weak team & coach around him. The board caved in knowing it the only way we could hold onto him was to resign the coach. So they did. I pray that we now find a way to get rid ‘We tried hard’ ‘the effort was there’ freak of a coach now! Pay him out I don’t care. His time is up
The problem with bonuses are that the money gets tied up even if the bonus isn't allocated that year. You can't go and spend it on another player as you have to keep it free.
So in essence you're down the extra $50k a year until origin is over that year... Then the June 30 deadline is upon you.
