I posted this on TCT yesterday and would like to get some IEE versions and responses as to who will be our starting wingers round one.

Still find it hard to believe that some people on here have make believe options with previous failures from our immediate past.
Sean Russell could be 7 ft tall and he will be out jumped, he has no high ball skills and is apprehensive right to the end of last season diving for the tryline. Unfortunately he has never gotten over the trauma of his horrific injuries. Dunster was always an overrated player even before his injuries, last year he could not keep up with Will Penisini when he made a break down the right wing.

If any coach could prepare a defence against Melb it is Ryles, but here we are telling him what he MUST DO.

The Pappilli process of playing the wing is a no brainer. The key to prevent the acrobatics of the Storm winger’s is variable to how to prevent the kickers positioning it accordingly, to make sure that other players are supporting the defender who will have a focus of disrupting the catcher. You actually saw how opposition sides started cancelling Lomax’s effectiveness with disruption by the end of last season and also through the pacific championships.
That’s why picking Lomax in the centres will make sense, how he uses him will not be telegraphed to Bellamey.

Iongi is only a rookie by Parra (unmet)standards, he is already a better fullback than anyone left from last year or even new this year. Gutho never had any sort of fullback support.

So yes the wingers will be interesting and the canditates will be carefully chosen….lets not hope it is with “deadwood” from past failures.

  • I feel game 1 vs storm is already a write off so I'd pick Papali to give him a shot and Bailey if fit.

I'm expecting one of the youngsters to step up over the pre season and create competition for spots im very keen to see what happens with Ethan Martyn

  • Russell and Papalii

  • I'd say ryles will go with this 1.longi 2.papalili 3.penisini 4.lomax 5. Simmonson if Simmo is injured Russell will be there.

Russell will improve under a different coaching set up Russell like many others became to comfortable under arthur.

  • Don't know who they will be, could be Russell and Dunster, all depends on Simmonson being fit for r1. Won't be Papali'i, I don't think Ryles is that game to put him up against Coates or Warbrick who both happen to be 1.94cm, Papali'i is 1.66.

I think Ryles might coax Lomax into playing wing for the first few games.

    • I don't believe Papali'i is only 166cm. That's a tiny little bloke if true, and possibly the shortest ever NRL player. It would also mean nobody in this highlights video was over 180cm: https://youtu.be/Qo2K3M9NvWU?si=XATQubPqsU6DJHUD

I could believe he is 176cm, which is still short for an NRL player.

      • Wrong Pou, it's official Joash is a Mini-Me

    • 1.66cms that's shorter than alfie! Would have been buying the guy up at Redcliffe.

  • It's an interesting question.

No team has a better pair of wingers off the ground than Melbourne and if JP is only 166cm than it will be suicide. It's easier to put bodies around a vertically challenged fullback -wingers get isolated more.

    • There is a lot of conjecture that 166cm is a misprint.....these mistakes seem quiet regular with players weight as well.

I am not perturbed about this aspect given the alternatives, I thnk he is 176 cm.

  • Ad much as I want Lomax in the centres, it makes sense to play him on the wing until JAC is free to play.

We seriously need to sign another winger and hooker for next season or we are screwed.

If we can't sign another winger, I'm playing Lomax on the wing and Simonsson at centre to limit the damage Simonsson will cause on the wing.

"Samrani is a winner...it would be interesting to see his W/L record with him in the team.   Penisini has had a good NRL career so far...he is not a world class centre or even one that can be a clutch player ...hes best games are solid 7/10..
