Bevan French vs Latrell Mitchell

both these blokes are getting talked up as future nrl fullbacks for their respective clubs and I assume they have faced off before in the 20s. Does anyone know if this is the case and who came out on top? Alternatively can anyone offer some insight into the playing styles, strengths and weaknesses of both? I'm looking forward to the match up in the nines this weekend

  • Both very fast can score from anywhere on the field both are playmakers Latrells defence is better than Bevans & that's why I think Latrell will become a bigger star but as soon as Bevan beefs up he will be a star.
  • French is smaller and quicker, compared to Mitchell who has been likened to GI with his big left hand fend and running style. He's a lot bigger and stronger, but French probably has the better ball skills, speed and agility. I would liken the match-up to GI vs James Tedesco on the NRL scale. However, Mitchell is not that much better than French as GI is to Tedesco if that makes sense? Mitchell has had the bigger wraps and hype though, and I can't recall any media writing much about French apart from BA said he was our long term fullback option. 2 players of differing styles but extremely exciting to watch them both go h2h on the weekend.
    • Pretty reasonable wrap on both players, TK. I have spoken in length about French across a stack of 1EE blogs in the last year and more recently on TCT but he is such an exciting talent that he always makes for a great conversation topic.

Regardless of any comparisons to Mitchell I am excited to see where he can take his game this year. I don't think our 20s team is outrageously strong but I do think we have a solid roster that should benefit from a full-time coach in Luke Burt. French will also have some stability in the halves for once with Dargan and Doolan there which will allow French to reap the benefits of a complete pre-season with the first-grade squad. You would think that the plan in the big picture is to get him into the NSW Cup later in the season but I think he is also an important piece in the development of the two halves mentioned before.

Lastly, it doesn't reflect in the stats but Bevan is also a terrific character off the field. Hopefully I am not putting the mockers on him here but he is by all accounts just a good kid and he should go on to become a great clubman.
