bevan french

Hi guys first blog here.Just thought id say people's opinion with French. Although Id love to see him in first grade and as fullback (considering we have Gordon), do you think he has the size to play in NRL? He has the speed and ability to do it, and i believe he would be a great supporting fullback but unsure if he needs to put on size... if he were to get a shot at fullback if Gordon was injured or not do you think he would need to put some size on so he wouldnt get rattled by defenders?

  • Give him a year and he will be great. Can still play u20. Gordon will retire or switch to wing at that point.

  • Most of his tries in the nines were scored from basically the wing ,backing up,positioning himself and using his speed so in that aspect he would kill it there if he had a chance . defensively though he might struggle.
  • Like I've said previously I think the best comparison is Brett Stewart. He's 184cm and 92kg compared to Bev who is supposedly 181 and 83kg. Players like Billy Slater, Ben Barba and Lachlan Coote are shorter than French, but I don't think you necessarily want to try and give Bev that stockier build all those players have developed to get up around the 90kg, because it will be difficult to add to much to his upper body without slowing him down too much and that's his first weapon. The fact that he's got a couple of inches on those guys means he can hit their weight, while staying leaner.

For me, if he can put on 5kg and get to that high eighty mark, he'll be fine.

It's not like anyone is going to be able to catch him, to rag doll him anyway. :-)

    • I see him more as a James Tedesco with his quick feet and running style but that's purely trivial
  • what a great position the eels are in this year we actually have real competition for backline spots. On what I have seen I really like Bevan French. He is a big part of our future and I hope that we blood him on the wing this year and a move to fullback next year. I would really like to see the club retaining him long term even over the prospect of Jarrad Hayne returning in a few years time.

  • I'd love to see Bev start this year in wenty in the 1 jersey just to get him use to the toughness of playing against grown men. Yes Frenchy scored 8 tires at the 9's but lets be honest apart from 2 or so all he did was catch the ball and fall over the line. Not taking anything away from Bev I think he is going to be a good prospect BUT NOT JUST YET. I'd love to see him as a ball playing 1 inside the oppositions 20m line, maybe that's why he has been getting a bit of a run with the halves to increase his balling playing skills???  If Jarryd was to come back yes I would like to see him wear 1 BUT in 2017 I think French will own the 1 jersey and I wouldn't mind seeing JH in the centre with Jenko.

  • BA was interviewed on this and it's a matter of Bevan getting his weight up.

He simply does not have the right muscle mass yet to play week in week out 1st grade.

BA says he's working hard in the gym and they are looking to put about 10 kilo's on him.

This will take a long time as its not just a matter of increasing weight but managing his joints and ensuring that they are not pushing him too hard.

My thoughts are that French will get a shot this year, but that is dependant on the blokes in front of him.

BA says if he's performing well he'll get a shot. It's about competion for spots and there is plenty of that.

If Gordon gets injured we might not have a choice but to put him back there.

    Apart from Norman,

    Who else can play fullback.

    • Kieran Moss

    • Scott Schulte has been also training at fullback whilst Moss has been out with turf toe.

    • Gutherson
