Bennett rules out Sydney based coaching gig

Champion coach Wayne Bennett has ruled out taking on a job with a Sydney-based NRL side next season and remains committed to returning to the city of Brisbane next year.

The seven-time premiership-winner’s name has been linked with the Parramatta Eels and Wests Tigers but Bennett is guaranteed to remain in Queensland.

There was a school of thought with the NRL delaying a decision on expansion Bennett may be open to an offer from another Sydney NRL club for 202

But Bennett is adamant it won’t be happening.

I know he's hardly going to admit it, but ruling out all Sydney clubs does feel pretty definitive. I'm sure we're sounding him out, but it really doesn't sound like he's interested.

  • I don't think we would be approaching him because he is out of our price range. Do you remember how quick we were to force pay cuts on a bunch of people and sack everyone else last year? If we wanted a big money coach we wouldn't have re-signed Arthur on less money.

    • And how exactly is that going for us Pou?  Right there is one of the problems. As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for".

        • Stupid comment Brissy.  How is their squad playing compared to ours? They smacked our arses last year and did again last night and will again if we meet in the semis. Oh and after three years at the helm, not nine.

            • Brilliant Souths side ? ... no.
Benny has shown his class in taking a passable side this far.
Reynolds - good goal kicker but not great in defence and getting older.
Walker - Put some pressure on him and he folds like ... an Eels side !! That's why he won't play SOO again.
The rest of the team is pretty ordinary.
Their only true star is Latrell who is a great player.
When you have the Sauce - who is well and truly over the hill and Jaxson Paulo (who ?) scoring tries  all over the shop against weak teams - us, then let's give Benny all the wraps he deserves.

                • Nowhere did I say they were brilliant.  I said they whacked us and will do again. Placing your own read on things becasue of your own biases. " When he hasn't got the brilliant Rabbits Squad to a Grand Final".  Uhm, those were your words, no one elses.  Yours!

                • They are brilliant. Souths had six blokes picked Origin this year. They are much better than we are, which is why Bennett was willing to go there. Souths are a rich club with a wealthy benefactor who doesn't have to answer to anybody (e.g. leagues club members) with how much money he tips into the NRL club. That's why they have a better team.

            • For a bloke that has been constantly saying, I am not defending BA, gees strangely enough you still defend him at every step.

                • Brissy youve defended him to the hilt all year to be fair lol, you throwing poor BA under the bus now bro?

Good to see youre finally on board with reality :) better late than never.

When did BA lose you? have you announced this on the tct?

                    • LOL! god love her, i'll have to call her and see hows shes doing.

hope shes had her covid shots going in and out of hospital.

  • Of course he isn't interested, in the current climate why would anyone (particularly someone in their 70's) want to hang around Sydney for the foreseable future?
