Bench Problems

Once again our club has a problem with not only the make up of the bench but how it's utilised. It's no secret we let in two tries while our starting front rowers were still on the feild and starting to tire . The punch in their hit ups as well as their lateral movement in defence the casualty. We tend to leak points generally during this 15/25 mark in our games , the last 5 minutes of the half and the last 10 minutes of the game. So is this a fatigue factor or poor utilisation of our replacements. Peats made 60 tackles and rendered useless in attack, why then is he not replaced when his numbers are getting high, who is watching the stats and monitoring player fatigue. If a player hits 30 tackles in a half regardless if it's the 20th or 35 th minute they should be replaced. Espeacially a member of the spine. Props once they've hit a 7 th hit up and 12 tackles are fighting fatigue. This is highlighted when defending consecutive sets or a sequence of them. Fatigue should not be measured by minutes which it seems to be but by workload. When you have an injured member of your preferred spine it pays to have a creative player on the bench to help offset your deficiency in attack. This was evident on Thursday. Although Pritchard offered punch he was used as a backrower, his speed around the ruck was an asset but we require more kicking threats and the creation of overlaps or a facilitator of hole runners.its fine to have a bench full of forwards when your spines fit a worker like Alvaro can be used. The flip side is without a spine member we need bench players who can add spark and change momentum of a game.

  • It' no secret that with the reduced interchange, each and every member of a forward pack will be required to play longer minutes.

This along the bunker, scrum clocks, and drop out clocks will put extra pressure on front rowers fitness levels & body shapes.

I know I'll cop flack gor this, but I feel that the Jnr Paulos of the NRL will become obsolete. Ok, he may have to lose 10-15 kls or so as some of the Dog's players have, but if he did this, it would reduce his impact and value.
I'm hearing his a 100% certainlty gonskis anyway (Raiders).

Jnr certainly looked totally fatigued after 15min & produced plenty of room for the Broncos yo exploit.
    • If they drop the interchange to 6 , a forward pack will be made up entirely of backrowers. Players like Tep will be in demand, physically imposing with a big motor.
    • Waaaa. Get over it Frank.
    • Raiders forwards didn't lose any weight in off season and played well for whole game in 35 degree heat. If they can do it so can other forwards.

  • Or even better still, eventually a bench may be made up exclusively of Kelly type replacements - useless nuffies that don't offer 1 iota of benefit to the side when selected.
    Ewhhh now there's a thought.
    • The bench isn't for backups, it's for interchange players. That's not the same as backups.

      • That's right they're not, but the bench can sure as hell be filled by nuffies like your mate Kelly.
        • Only if your first choice bench forwards are all injured.

  • 9. Pritchard
    13. Peats
    14. Moeroa
    15. Terepo
    16. Wicks
    17. Edwards
  • If you had a tired front rower defending out wide I know where the attack would be sending the ball.

Or maybe they would think outside the box and ignore it Poppa?
