From the club:
Scans confirmed Pirtek Parramatta Eels forward Ben Smith required surgery for his damaged pectoral muscle suffered in last weekend’s trial match against Penrith.
Smith underwent surgery today and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.
Eels Coach Stephen Kearney said:
“Ben’s obviously very disappointed but there’s positive news in the fact he’s a good chance to return to the field later this season,” Kearney said.
“He’s an important part of our squad and losing him is a blow for us, but fortunately we have a few players who can cover his position.”

Not what you want when you're playing for a contract, although some posters have mentioned that he plans on hanging up the boots at the end of the season anyway.
yes hopefully they can
Terrible news. His efforts go largely unnoticed by many fans, but you can't doubt his commitment and defensive ability. I'd say he would be the best one on one tackler at this club. Let's hope Lasalo and Horo can step up big time. This could be Lasalo's career defining season.
Hope he recovers, big/important part of the team.
I like his game and will miss it, hopefully our youth steps up to the plate.
Maybe Paulo can make more of an impact if given the same opportunity Lasalo and Horo have been.
I do not think SK will play Paddy O that much, how has Penese progressed and what injury does Brien have?
I would give Rory a start at locknor even the centres first round of we are short with injuries?
I've always liked Benny. Very unfortunate for him. Justin Horo, Pat O'hanlon and Taniela Lasalo are all there though so I don't think it will be too much of a loss.
One of my favourites and it's really sad to see him out for a long period. I'd hate to see him not be able to play another game for our club this season. He's one of our most experienced and best value for money players in our squad and won't even count towards our cap a few years down the track and is essentially a free player that's really reliable and consistent. It would be a very very stupid decision to let him go. Anyone with a brain can see that.
