The latest stadium news is bad news for most. However, it is good news that the State Government`s motive for building the stadiums is on its way to coming to naught There may not be an opening in April after all---no tenants! No good news, for the government just before the election.! The law of unexpected consequences.? The Sydney Morning Herald has a large article on this matter in the sporting section this morning. The pros and cons are revealed and some speculation is made. One of these, in my own words, is that Souths and Easts should thank Bernie Gurr for his position of not agreeing to terms on this matter. For if they are considering being tenants at the new Sydney stadium they can be sure, at this early date, that they will be expected to pay top rates of rent for the privilege. As that stadium will cost $700 million against "our`s" costing $300 million their rent could be up to two or three times what the eels rent is expected and that is said to be three times more than the Eels think is fair value. Thus, Souths and Easts could be looking at a rent up to six times what they are now paying at the SFS. I don`t think either club could pay that in the long term. At least Parramatta has alerted them before any axe has fallen. If they are smart they will move on this ASAP which would help Parramatta in their dispute with the stadium controllers.
