Australia a superpower?

I've brought this up before. Can we take on the world or are we a middleweight? Nuclear weapons may increase our stance in the world. Tough times up ahead.

  • Hahaha in your dreams.
  • In a full scale war sense we are featherweights, but politically we play the game well ie alignment with the US and GB.
  • Our armed forces are among the best trained in the world but shear firepower and man power would have us as cannon fodder if we went alone.

  • Yep. We could whip Kiribati in a war and we can get Bird-poo island to keep taking asylum seekers for the cash.
  • If it was a rugby league World Cup then we would be like the Cook Islands. Can compete with some teams in the region but will cop a belting against the powerhouses.
  • We are like that little dog that yaps along next to the big Bulldog in those Buggs Bunny cartoons .
  • We don't need nuclear weapons, however we control a fair bit of the world's uranium so there is some power there. What we do well however is act as the calm voice in the region. We probably need to revisit that stance, especially with the current issues with China.
  • We are lightweights

  • What's that Spike ?
  • I think if we are going to take the world's nuclear waste and bury it in the desert then we might as well make our own waste and create some of the cheapest electricity in the world by building our own nuclear power plants. The time has come, before no one can afford to turn on a light and we have endless summer blackouts. Ask a South Australian about wind generated power and the endless problems and huge bills let alone the mountainous government subsidies to the wind farm owners. Time to value add to our own exports. I never thought this in the past but wind just does not cut the mustard and I can't see coal stations ever being built again.
