Are today's Dragons better than 80's Eels?

According to NRL.com the current Dragons side is the best in the last 40 years. It seems that they have forgotten about the great Parramatta side of the 1980's. It contained players such as Peter Sterling, Brett Kenny, Ray Price, Michael Cronin, Steve Ella, Eric Grothe Snr, and Peter Wynn. The Dragons are being called the best team of the last 40 years due to their defensive record. I believe they have forgotten that you need to win premierships as well. In the 1980's Parramatta won 4 competitions in a period of 6 seasons. The Dragons, however have won just 1 competition in the past 10 years and even though they look set to win a second this season Wayne Bennett is leaving at the end of this year and i can't see them winning another comp once he is gone. If you look at the Parramatta side of the '80s once Jack Gibson left they were still able to win another premiership under John Monie. In my mind you need more than just a good defence to be named the best team of the last 40 years.

  • Not worthy of a parra blog!!!!!
  • Give it a few hours and it will be moved to Top Blog status with all the other favourites that end up there
  • Dragons team is shit.  Darius Boyd is there only good player.

Soward and Creagh are the biggest cats in the game.

All they have is Wayne Bennett who has taught them discipline and defence.

They won't win the GF this year.

  • Given the article quotes Justin Poore, and SuperEel has related the article back to comparing the side to our Parramatta side, I think it's clearly Parra related and an interesting discussion. I'm going to change the headline to make it reflect SuperEel 22's point.
  • Yes let's compare Hornby and Coward to Kenny and Sterling. Now let's compare Ray Price to any of their backrowers. How about Eric Grothe Snr to Morris. No comparison in my view the Eel's 80's team is superior in all departments.

  • What a joke, they got a long way to go to prove that!
  • There is no way you can start comparing the current St George team with the great Parra side of the 80's.

Win at least back to back premierships first and then we can start comparing them to the likes of Brisbane 92/93, Canberra 89/90, Canterbury 84/85 and Parra 81-83.

  • I think the Saints teams to be as dominant as they have been over the last 2 and a half seasons in the salary cap era is certainly a massive achievment.

Realistically on paper they aren't a team of champions yet they are a champion team, I think its a credit to them and to Bennets ability as a coach.

In saying that though they still have a lot of work to do to be compared to some of the 'great' teams of different era's, if they keep up there dominance for a few more seasons, and whose to say they can't, then I think they can absolutely lay claim to being up there.

  • No.. they are just plain gay (in a non homosexual way)

  • to answer the thread title question.....errr, a resounding HELL NO.
