Arana Taumata released from Cowboys

Cowboys pivot Arana Taumata has been given a release from the Cowboys and wants to settle back in Sydney with two clubs chasing his signature, according to an online media report.

His manager Sam Ayoub and Cowboys CEO Peter Parr said the move had nothing to do with disciplinary issues - Taumata has been released previously by a succession of clubs for breaches of conduct policies.

Ayoub said he hoped to announced Taumata's new club within the next 48 hours.

While Taumata has been highly regarded talent-wise, he has failed to make his mark in the NRL and was dropped from the Cowboys based on his defensive performances.

Obviously, the Eels are still chasing halves and, along with Manly, would be considered one of the most likely clubs to be interested in his signature. Taumata's background is eerily similar to that of another Eels recruit Reni Maitua.

Taumata is a New Zealand Maoris representative.

  • I don't know what to make of him to be honest.
He looked good in the centres in patches, and didn't do too badly against us, but he's probably a better player in the halves.

I guess the only problem is the experience factor and whether he has enough of it to lead a team around the park.
  • Please no times 10. Didn't he get sacked from the Dogs, the Tigers and now the Cowboys?
  • As the great Jack said.....

All the Talent in the world does not equate to talent off It !

    Enough said !
  • he played gun in centre against us last year
  • Well, we're short in the centres as well!
  • I'd say if we did get him
He should be on a 1 year contract, and if he didn't perform well in the year just let him go afterwards
  • From what I can recall every club that sacked him were very sorry to see him go because he is a freakish footballer that loves the piss ups as well as his drugs I would say. If you could convince him to play footy and get off all the crap he is on then you have a huge chance of having another Todd Carney on your hands. I say give the kid a chance and there is a huge chance that our centre problem will be resolved for a fraction of a price.

I know many people don't want nothing to do with problem kids but I for one wil always give anyone a chance if they are willing enough. I believe that everone makes
mistakes in life. With the proper guidance many of the problem kids do go on to fix their issues and when they do the sky is the limit because most of them have unbelievable talents. Give him a contract and get Timana Tahu to be his guardian and watch the kid become a superstar.
  • PS That article says he was "dropped for his defensive lapses"... For a team that regularly gave away 30+ points a game this year, is this really what we need?
  • I read an article about him in Rugby League Week or Big League or one of those mags and he was saying how it finally sunk in and he'd basically given up drinking.

Defensive deficiencies can be worked on, talent can't. I'm sure he'd come cheap and I don't think we'd have a lot to lose, quite frankly.
  • It doesn't really make sense why the Cowboys would release him?

With his rap sheet they could probably snag him on a bare minimum contract and surely his said potential would be worth another punt?

So for mine if it hasn't been for disciplinary reasons it just means they musn't rate him. That or he isn't showing enough application at training and around the club that he want's to fulfil his ability.
