Watmough deserves to take his place in Origin on the back of his tremendous contribution to the Blues' efforts in the two matches he played last year. He was the best player on the park in Origin 3 and deservedly won M.O.T.M and was the Blues best player behind Hayne throughout the series.
In the past he's had the tendency to go missing in the big games - e.g. the Storm-Manly GF in 2007 - but I believe he's eradicated that from his game and is now a very potent weapon for us in Origin. Unlike any other backrower, Watmough makes breaks through the centre of the park - through the teeth of the oppositions forwards using his speed and jink and will cause more problems for the defense than any other backrower IMO.
Hindy is an Origin player and its no suprise the last time we won a series, he was playing. There's no point bringing him off the bench because he doesn't offer 'impact' per se but his defensive work and offloads would have been very useful to what is a fairly inexperienced forward pack. Personally, I would have played him in the second row alongside Ben Creagh and played Watmough at lock. Waterhouse doesn't really offer anything that Hindy doesn't and isn't as dependable.
Yeah I forgot Waterhouse got picked to be perfectly honest, I was thinking of Ben Creagh and Watmough when I wrote this blog and I figured that Creagh has been in great form so his selection is warranted.
As for Watmough I actually don't think he has been at this destructive best this year.
You are right though the guy that perhaps most lucky to be picked was Waterhouse, I watch quite a few Panthers games because my wife is a penriff fan and I haven't seen him do a hell of a lot that stands out.
Furthermore, Hindy averages 86.8m per game while Waterhouse is averaging 82.2m. Hindmarsh averages 77 minutes per game while Waterhouse averages 63.8 mins so you get greater value from Hindmarsh.
Finally, and most telling, Hindmarsh averages 44.2 tackles, 1.9 missed tackles and 0.8 ineffective tackles per game while Waterhouse averages 24.2 tackles, 3.2 missed tackles and 2.5 ineffective tackles per game.
So really, when you look at the stats, if they wanted a hard working backrower like Waterhouse in the team who's capable of an offload or two, then Hindmarsh trumps Waterhouse on pretty much every statistical scale that matters.
P.S. Poor old EELS4life2010! All these hard facts and statistics must be doing his head in! I think this is more his scene:
