An open letter to the forwards of Parra

Let me start with a question – “parra forwardz, what are you playing for?”If your answer is anything other than “a premiership”, please ignore my letter. If you do want to win what only 17 players can claim each year, here is what I think you must do:1. Take a beating. To be successfully, and make those backs pity you (which in turn allows them to perform), hit that line, over and over again. Let them break your pretty nose, not once, not twice, but as many times as it takes the referee to blow that bloody whistle. Let me tell you, it will not be in the first time, so don’t be soft. No pain no bloody gain2. Hit that ball up hard, every single time. Put fear in the opposition. Make them have doubt about tackling you. Let them know every time you take a run, they are going to have to earn their living. Putting dread in their minds puts you and the team in a superior position. No pain no bloody gain3. Back your brother. There is no better feeling than when one of yours is done wrong to know the team has your back. We cannot throw the first punch and I do not want you to do that. I want you to watch your boys back, see what they are doing, how much they are taking for the team. Make sure you give as well as you take. No pain no bloody gain4. Don’t think you are a referee. One of the softest things a forward can do, is think he is wronged. If you see something and the referee does not see it, well, it does not matter. Keep at it, keep doing what BA is instilling in you. Don’t let a bad call get you down, you know why? Cause there will always be bad calls in a game, both ways, and most times it will end up being 50/50. So don’t be a ref, focus on what your job is come what may. If you want to be a ref, then leave the bloody teamLets start with baby steps, the above should keep you focused and winning us games. Without you guys doing the dirty, hard, filthy work, the glamor boys of the back line cannot shine (and wine, dine in the pantomime). They will get all the credit “hey look, 3 of the 4 top try scores are eels backs” I for one will know, the unsung hero’s are the ones whom are making them look good (you forwards) and you know what, who cares, cause if we want to win a premiership (refer to the beginning of my letter) we have to operate as a collective. You forwards are the springboard to success, without you, we are not going anywhere.I don’t want to bust any bubbles, but do not take the saint game as a guide. You were beaten by the baby tigers and the Origin starting props from the Cowboys demolished you. Otherwise you have done very very very well (apart from Peatsy missing in the second game, but that was a learning curve for us all). You have made me proud. The road is long, with many a winding turn (credit to Buddy Holly). Just realise, you have to go the extra 10% if you want to bring home that premiership ring. I hope that is what you really want.I know you can do it, if not this year then 100% the next. But you will need to ensure you have that backbone of steel, cause in this comp, it does not come easy, everyone is aim for that spot on top but do the math, there are around 300 of you aiming for something only 17 can achieve. You must go the extra mile to achieve.I will always love the eels, no matter what, but I feel with you boys, you can make me ecstatic, like I have not felt since ‘86One Proud Eels supporter.

  • Great blog Boss, one of the blogs of the year, im with you on this, our forwards are going pretty good and a few special young blokes are having a go and making a good fist of FG, id like this blog to be printed out and go to our pack, theres a few great reminders here.

  • Some great points Bosseel. I think we aren't too far off fulfilling most of your points. Although I don't think teams fear us yet, we have a pack working well together and for each other that is getting better as the season goes on.

"He played two weeks I think at left centre last year at the start. We abandoned that quickly but maybe we can consider it next year with Russell gone. Maybe a year or two next to the fox would sort him out."
