I had planned to meet Tony and Daneel at the Caxton prior to the game but they were running late, so I was thinking I'd be there drinking on my nigel. But there I am walking up to the place and I look to my left and I see a 1Eyed Eel t-shirt! So I introduce myself and its fpv eel. Drinking partner sorted! We get up there and we find Rhys Luke and his fiancee, before Tony and Dan finally arrive with big flags. Ends up that Tony has some spare seats so we all end up sitting together for the night.
We leave the Caxton and break out the chants walking to the ground. Triple M want to photograph us, so we unfurl the flags and then walk around the Stadium singing We all fight for the Blue & Gold Army. Various banter ensues with Broncos supporters. Get into the ground and into the Eels supporter bay. Tony hands out the song sheets and we soon find that its easier to get Brisbane people singing than it is in Sydney!
Game starts. Eels on fire. I'm particularly chuffed because KK and Mateo are firing. More singing and chants. Half-time, we grab the flags and go for a lap of honour around the Stadium, singing as we go. My personal favourite involved stopping in front of the bar and signing Buy a beer if you love the Eels..
Run into Patrick O'Hanlon and say hello. I tell him I've been talking him up for two years and he has to prove me right next year, and he just says ever so humbly "I'll do my best". Lovely kid and is seriously ten foot tall. I promise that we'll come up with an Irish-themed chant for him next year.
Back for the kick off. Delight as the Eels keep punching ahead. Kris sets up his try. Luke Burt scores. Take that Sinbad :-) Could the night get any better. Then just to prove that God is indeed an Eel supporter Anthony Mitchell scores on the buzzer. He's not a rake, he's a fucking tractor!
Take up the flags. Meet up with Johno. Lots more singing as we leave the ground. Lovely friendly banter with Brisbane supporters who I applaud heartily for being really good sports. Longest walk into the world, ensues to find St Pauls Tavern but we eventually get there and meet up with some more folk including Parraloft.
Players arrive and as usual are fabulous. Too many chats to recall them all but highlights include: Told Feleti I was peeved he was leaving because it meant I had to re-design the banner and he says I just have to start 1Eyed Warrior for him. Telling Ant Mitchell how proud we were of him and singing him his song. I met Marcus Perenara - who you may recall played for us, for a while. I was a massive fan of Marcus, I thought he had so much untapped talent - we talked about that reserve grade final where he just dominated and then kicked the winning field goal. Met a number of the directors include Roy. And Justin Poore, who I also met last week, is seriously the friendliest guy in the world. Also worth noting that the performer they had there, was super cute and sung while playing the bongos :-)
So glad I decided to take the week off!
