There are those in AFL who think that a rectangular field is the way to go. As it is at matches at the MCG, spectators are a long way from the action
I think that it has been inspired by the short form of the game in League and Rugby. The AFL would argue that it is derived from twenty 20 cricket
My understanding is that this is all about being able to push into countries that don't have circular grounds. Most European countries don't play cricket, hence don't have a lot of circular grounds, but you can guarantee that pretty much every country on earth plays soccer or rugby of some description.
