A Few Things about Game against Tigers!

Firstly, very pleased about the win against the Tigers and the 2 points. I actually thought the Eels might have really struggled against the Tigers with it being Benji's 300th game. There were a few things I noticed in particular that the Eels really need to work on coming into the end part of the season:

1) Why does Sivo continually leave space outside him for the opposition to take advantage of? Most of the Tigers tries were on Sivo's side. Is it because he and Hoffman dont click?

2) The Eels appear to have a lot of times during this game and other games where they seem to lull or lapse out of full concentration in both attack and defence.

3) Why wasnt Dylan Brown given some time off tonight and Salmon brought on?

4) Why wasnt the 'controversial ' try that Jennings from the Tigers scored given to the bunker to decide as it was clearly either a forward pass or a knock on

5) If the Eels are to be a serious force for the remainder of this season, make the finals and be a force in the finals they (Brad Arthur) needs to work on those areas.

* Namely: Sivo's defence on the line, lapses during games, rotation of D. Brown.

6) Compliment must be given to Brad Arthur as he has been utilizing his bench rotations to a greater advantange over the past month or longer! He appears to.have improved in certain areas of his coaching.

  • Good win in terms of ladder, but a lot of 1 ou run in in our own half not much support running and I think we played ok but not good enough to worry good teams on todays performance but we won

    • If you re-watch the game, the one out stuff was part of the game plan used to form the shapes required in the defensive lines and if they did not come about they continued with the one out plays with a kick before the sixth tackle. The pattern was very predictable much of the game.

To me, it was obvious they kept the game plan very simple as to both absorb all the Tigers hype (Benji's 300th) and to maintain composure while pressuring the Tigers whenever possible. It worked, we won.

For 80 minutes our boys stuck to the game plan, relying on the above and Moses kicking game and when the attacking shapes were right exploit the openings - an example of a few being the awesome skillful pass from Nathan Brown to Taka who scored late in the 2nd half.

A lot of steel and controlled grind was provided by our boys and I'm very stoked because they are developing a series of various types of game plans come attacking and defensive formations.... a) expansive game v Broncos a few weeks ago, b) grind and pressure v Raiders 2 weeks ago, c) lots of composure, grit, steel and sticking 80 minutes to a very simple game plan and let their confidence win the game today.

We are already doing much better than our 2017 efforts.

I'm predicting that we are the dark horse in this years campaign and most teams will already be looking over their shoulders at us.

For this to all come about, there must be no more thrashings or poor efforts against teams we were favoured to beat and that this composure, confidence, keep it simple, steel, grind and absorbing the high energy of the opposition and containing it in our game plan continues every week.

There is also that swan song energy coming from Mau, Tepai and others who are NOW VERY HUNGRY for a real shot at a GF victory.

      Go the Eels.

  • Sivo's defence IMO has been very good this year because he has been rushing up. Maybe the Tigers did their homework on him and executed well to isolate this. Or maybe he didn't come up with as much conviction as he normally does. Whatever i wouldn't be too hard on him yet. It will happen with wingers defending at times.

  • Yep our left side defence needs some work, and so dose our marker defence. Were to slow gettin of the ground, tigers made a lot of ground in behind the ruck, our markers miss and our middle struggle.

In sayin that we played good enough to win.

  • Sivo merely follows his Centre in. Hoffman goes in, Sivo must follow.

      • Yeah he's gotta trust Dylan Brown. What was strange is that the Tigers don't have the most threatening edge forwards. Why he felt the need to hedge is strange.

  • Sivo will be ok outside of jennings or blake once they came back were missing 2 class centers and still winning cant wait to get em back

  • Sivo really didn't do too much wrong, the Tigers just worked over our left hand defense very well, their playmakers straightened and held the ball to the line on their shift to their right drawing in D Brown and Hoffman which left Sivo isolated with two players to defend, he actually tried to do the right thing by rushing in to try cut down the play but was unable to.

  • That’s the first game where you could argue Sivo was not outstanding defensively so not sure why you are making a big deal of it. Anyway they were more the fault of the inside men including Hoffman who isn’t the worlds greatest defensive centre positionally and never has been.

    • Sivo did tend to come in too soon defensively earlier this year but thats probably due to lack of experience but he has improved but today against the Tigers it the worst hes been since those earlier games. Its probably due to not having Jennings inside instead of Hoffman. The team is certainly better with Michael Jennings in the team!
