A curiosity query

Out of curiosity I was wondering if Phil would be able to share some site statistics with us ?   I don’t ask this to be a smartarse , I’m actually very interested in knowing how high it peaked vs the slump ( if there’s been a slump ) , just ballpark , a statistical read would be pretty interesting actually even if it’s dumbed down charts with basic info on it . It’d be cool to see how the site has performed against how the teams been performing , members online , certain threads performance if that’s available ? I’m sure some of the members that’ve been around a while ( all members from all factions , for want of a better word ) would find some kind of analysis pretty interesting .  Understanding that you can’t just divulge all the data for site reasons , but surely you can whip up some kind of statistical thread for an interesting read ?

It may even give some of us an idea of what threads we need to contribute to liven up the screen again .

  • That's a good idea and although I know the answer it would still be interested.  Negativity creates more interaction than positivity.  Not only on footy forums but in general.

I saw report on it regarding other social media platforms. Once  negative comments were introduced it would spark activity hence why many sites don't like punishing those that bring controversy.  People love to complain yet not many people feel the need to encourage or deliver positive comments.

Also everyone feels their opinion is right and instead of listening and trying to understand other views feel if they repeat their opinion until the other person gives up and leaves the discussion they have won the argument.   They also proved many people got a chemical rush of endorphins to validate this in testing.

  • There's been a huge slump ever since this new format started!!

  • This is a good idea Wiz. In fact, I reckon we could go one step further and ask Phil to compile stats like a footy game. How do the following sound:

Try - For every blog you post you get 4 points.

Try assist - Every time you help someone make a blog, you get a blog assist.

Sin bin - Each time you get suspened from the site you are in the sin bin.

Tackles - For every good reply post you get a tick in this box.

Missed tackles - For every bad reply post you get a missed tackle.

Post contact metres - For persistence in getting your point across.

Offloads - For deflecting attention successfully.

I'm sure there are plenty of others we can add.

    • But that's where it falls apart. A suspension actually ends.

    • So if we go down that road  where  does coach idea  you pass your score  you win  fit in to this

    • Coach would be getting -4 for own goals

      • lol

You write, you blog, you win!

  • Wiz,

Mate, when we loose there are shite loads more comments and those comments are never flattering.  Compare this to the comments made when we win and it’s a case of chalk and cheese.

There is even whinging when we win.  The complaints far outweigh the congratulary comments and blogs and there would be huge peaks of comments when we are performing poorly.

I believe that It’s inversely proportional to the performances on the field.  In your humble opinion, would you agree with my summation?

  • He would have this information but it would not be the for public consumption. Like any company it will use the data gathered to profit from it, via his advertisements through your search engines. Hence when you get the message this site is not secure proceed via the advanced section. This site is open to the owner to do as he pleases with what ever you blog or share.

How can 1 make a living if he didnt make any money from providing a service.

  • So I was going to write a blog saying woohoo, somewhere along the way we passed 5000 members, but I'll loop into this.

So firstly we passed 5,000 members.

I think in general this site was reversing a general trend away from internet forums as much of the kind of discussion that you find on internet forums now takes place on places like Facebook and Twitter. Last year was the first that the site plateaued and this is the first there has been a decline. I think the demographic has gotten clearer for the site, and it's generally related to the audience that Facebook and Twitter doesn't reach.

From a marketing/audience point of view, we have been impacted by a change in the way Google presents results. We always got a lot of traffic from being so highly ranked on Google. For a long time, 1Eyed was the number two result behind the official site, but Google pushes a whole bunch of "real-time results" into those searches, ie articles, tweets, etc and that has pushed us way down the front page and onto page two sometimes.

The primary remaining factor is the attention I can give the site. If you want to grow a website like this, it takes a lot of work and when I give the site attention, I can always drive a boost in traffic/engagement/etc. However, my business has done particularly well in the last 24 months and that's really absorbed all my time and still does. I can go weeks on end without having the chance to look at the site when we've got a deadline for a new project, and at that point I just have to hope you all run things pretty much without me. The change of platform was painful but I think that's stablised now and it was needed because the old platform was starting to fall apart at the seams.

While I'm at that point, you guys really drive it. For me, this is really something that is here for this community, rather than any personal gain. It certainly isn't something that warrants my attention from a financial perspective, but I feel I have a responsibility to keep it ticking along because it's been something that has been important for a lot of people.
