4th Nation in the 4 Nations

The four nations is just about here and I’ll be one of the few (Only 6000 tix sold so far) to go to Parra Stadium to watch the Kangaroo’s v Kumul’s. Its great that PNG get to participate in a major League contest like this, but shouldn’t a competition like this be more about being competitive than just participating? No offence intended to the Kumul’s, I’ll be barracking for them. But I think they will be lucky to stay within 40 of the Roo’s.The way the comp is currently run (Northern Hemishpere = Euro cup winner gets in, Southern = Pacific cup winner gets in) it seems there will always be a minnow nation there making up the numbers. France ended last year’s tournament with a points aggregate of -110 from three games. Not good. The Euro and Pacific Cups are a great thing for these developing nations, but instead of letting the winner into the following years 4 nation comp, would it be better to make a ‘best of’ team (Pacific Nations / Euro Nations) out of all countries participating? So this year for example, the fourth team in would be a combination of PNG, Fiji, Tongan and Samoan players (France, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in the Northern hemisphere).Similar to the West Indies cricket team, it would give these developing league nation’s representation on the world stage that would be a lot (or at least a bit) more competitive against the big guns than if there were to stand alone against Aus or NZ.I haven’t bothered but would be good to see some line-ups comprised of players eligible for these teams.

Excellent idea mate, I reckon you could get some good teams from those pools, still not going to beat the Kiwis or Aussies but the experience they get could be taken back to their respective countries to improve the skill levels across the board.

the more these minnows play, the better and stronger they will become. We should be playing PNG at least once a year.
