27 round season to headline new NRL structure for 2023

27 rounds and 3 byes is the new way for NRL in 2023 to avoid burnout in the season. I think it would be better to even perhaps have that week off before semis and place something in between like NSW Cup, QLD Cup and NRLW for that week. Not sure on 3 byes however, but 27 means the season must start a week earlier on March 2nd in order to meet the proposed October long weekend date for the GF on October 1st.

    • You are right Wilson, no matter what way they go not everyone will be happy. Go to shorter year the broadcasters get upset, extend it for more games players get upset.

      • Don't think they'll be playing more games, it'll still be 24 games played.

The make-up of the draw will be not an easy task this time around. I just hope our byes are timed perfectly and not the 1st cab off the rank.

  • they should keeped it 16 teams got rid of the pre season games and played home and away games

  • 3 byes is too many imo, should have stayed at 2

  • So it's the RLPA pushing for it; for reduced player fatigue with Origin and so on?

I believe we've only had one season with 17 teams before: 1999, 26 rounds, 2 byes, wasn't it?

Can't recall a 27 round season or 3 bye rounds in a year.

I suppose teams will still play 24 games by the sounds of it. Just adds an extra week to the season.

Problem seems to be that Origin players won't be allowed to back up anymore if it goes ahead, and clubs may get less value out of their player contracts unless they counter it somehow.

Btw, anyone know when the new CBA is happening? Can't recall the specifics. Wonder if this will form part of it.

    • Not that i can remember HOE, 26 is the longest i've seen with 2 byes each.

Hope Parra do not get a round 1 bye, that would suck but a good start to the year with 2 points lol.

      • It could mean some teams could miss their best regular Origin players for up to 6 weeks (up to a quarter of the playing season 6/24) if they can't play the week leading up to Origin nor backup after it.

  • I hate byes.

If they are worried about burnout then increase the squads so that players can be rotated in and out.

    • That is the thing with Origin players though in that nobody is forcing them to back up, yet the go on about backing up. Nobody is forcing anyone to play footy simple as that.

  • No, far too long, we actually need a shorter regular season. 20 rounds is plenty, have a 4 week break for Origin, and a 3 week post season. Leaves plenty of room for international footy

"Ok NRL pre-season should not count, no matter if NRL or club imposed it. Rep games, even though no guarentee of getting selected, counts. NRL pre-season does not register in stats at all therefore does not count."
