2023 Season Awards

With the season not quite over, i think we are able to distinguish who should be awarded what. So here are the categories.

Best Player

Most Improved

Most Disappointing

Best Signing

Worst Signing

Rookie of the year

Player to watch in 2024

Junior to watch in 2024

Where do we finish in 2024.

I will start

Best player: Mitchell Moses, overall he has had a great year in my eyes, considering the cattle he has been dealt.

Most Improved: Bryce Cartwright, no brainer. Going from an impact back-rower due to his skills, to being a work horse 80min back-row is astounding. BA is as much to praise as Carty but wonderful season.

Most Disappointing: Junior Paulo, again think this is a no brainer. Not sure if it is decline due to age, carrying an injury or just out of sync. But being a co-captain and on 950k a year, you expect Haas level play, hard task master maybe but it is true.

Best Signing: Again, no brainer. J'Maine Hopgood, what a player. He is going to have a massive 2024 after having another full pre-season as a full-time NRL player. I have set the bar of him being selected for Australia in the squad next year. He had a great start, then fell behind due to his body becoming accumilated to full-time NRL, then got going around round 9-10.

Worst Signing: Jirah Momoisea. I have gotten into him a fair bit this year, purely that i feel he is giving effort he put in with his performances. Hopefully he can find form in 2024, or maybe he is just moved elsewhere to create a top 30 spot for someone else.

Rookie of the year: Brendan Hands, by default in the sense he has played the most games of any rookie, will win it. But i would be naming Luca Moretti as rookie of the year. Just a meat axe, puts his body on the line every run and is a high effort player. Jumped Makatoa, Ogden and Rodwell in the depth.

Player to watch in 2024: Hopgood is logical, though i will pick someone else for sake of it, Wiremu Greig. If Paulo is in decline, Greig could get a run in 2025 as the future starter. A pre-season after more NRL games, full of confidence and a new contract, he will feel more settled.

Junior to watch in 2024: I am going to go with Matthew Arthur, he will be the 3rd hooker in line. At 19, i think he will get a debut at some point in 2024 and lean towards taking on Lussick for 2025. He looks good in Flegg, should definately get NSW cup game time, if Hands is in NSW cup he can play some time in the halves or at Lock for MA to get game time. I would not be surprised come late 2024, Matt Arthur is at 14.

Finish for 2024: I see us around the 6-8 range at this stage, full strength. We need to sign a Centre badly and get more depth in many areas. At least 2-3 backline signings, another half, another forward and perhaps a utility.

Everyone else, enjoy picking and choosing.

  • Best player - I'll also go with Moses. Brown was going to be that player but he stuffed that up

Most disappointing - sivo for mine. His the one player we needed to bring the ball back with power and get them much needed metres to start the sets off well. considering we don't have the size in the back line bar him and will. Sivo looks uninterested, lazy and unfit compared what he use to be.

most improved - it was between Bailey and carty but I can't go past party considering the gap ipap left his done just as good of a job.

best signing - hopgood for sure

worst signing - momosia by far but you could argue Hodgson on the field was just as bad. 400k for him we could of went after someone like Jacob liddle who's doing a really fine job at the dragons or Sam verills, Marshall king. I'm sure off field he is doing wonders but us fans done see that.

rookie I'm gonna say hands. His done a fine Job for what has been asked of him.

player to watch in 2024 I will say moretti and Greg

rookies for 2024- this is the time some of these sg ball kids will come in and push for spots for 2025. Blaze will debut as long as his body is right,I suspect at at ctw. Richard penisini will get a shot on the wing or ctw. Matt athur like you have mentioned will get a bench spot at some stage. Charlie geyumer and jock brazel will push their case for the back row spots. Jjbm will get some game time off the bench.

I think we finish 10th this year on 30 points and 2 points out of the 8

    Rookie - Brendan Hands

Player to Watch 2024 - Penisni

Best Stupidest Play - RCG knees into back

Best Try - Gutherson to seal the win over the Titans.

Best Coach Quote - Chase the Collision / Frontload our effort

We will finish right on the cutoff at 8th/9th spot.

  • Best Player: Mitch Moses. Stepped up his game this year and has been outstanding no matter what the haters say.

Most Improved: Cartwright by a country mile. He has been our best edge forward with daylight second.

Most Disappointing: BA. He hasn't fixed our defensive frailties in the 10 years he's been in charge.

Best Signing: Hopgood. Nothing else needs saying.

Worst Signing: As a player, Josh Hodgson and no one else even comes close.

Rookie of the year: Has to be Hands. If it wasn't for him we would be fighting for the spoon with Hodgson playing 80 minutes per game.

Player to watch in 2024: Dylan Brown. He needs to have a special year next year.

Junior to watch in 2024: Hard to say as our juniors are pretty average.

Where do we finish in 2024: Unless we find some quality backs, I don't see us finishing higher than 10th.

    • lol our juniors are pretty average when they won the SG ball lol

      • How did reserve grade go EA.

        • A bit better with some of our juniors featuring.

  • Best player gutho

    Most improved  Hands

    Most disappointing Brown

    Best signing  Hopgood

    Worst signing  Momoisea

    Rookie of the year Moretti

Player to watch in 24 Brown

Junior to watch in 24 ?

Where we finish in 24 top 4

  • Best Player - Mitch Moses

    Most Improved - Carty

    Most Disappointing - Maika Sivo

    Best signing - J-Hop

    Worst signing - Jirah Momoisea

Rookie of the year - Brendan Hands

    PTW 2024 - Dylan Brown

    JTW 2024 - Richard Penisini

    2024 result - Top 6

  • Best Player:  King Gutho

    Most Improved:  Bryce Cartwright

Most Disappointing:  On Field- Maika Sivo     Off Field- Brown and Matterson

    Best Signing: J'Maine Hopgood

Worst Signing:  Unfortunately, it's Josh Hodgson

Rookie of the year: Brendan Hands

Player to watch in 2024: Hopefully someone playing first grade at another club

Junior to watch in 2024: Don't know anything about the juniors

Where do we finish in 2024: Recruitment will determine this. With the squad we have, we miss the 8 again.

  • Best player - very hard as most have been bog average at times. Let's go with Gutho.

Most improved - Emu. The big boy has surpassed expectations.

Most Disappointing - Paulo in a close finish with Hodgson. Paulo gets stats that look good but he has minimal impact in most games. Hodgson was crap 99% of the time but only played 6 games or so.

Best signing - easily Hopgood on field with Barrett off field.

Worst signing - tie between Momoisea & Hodgson. Momoisea looks worse every game whilst Hodgson is nominated for above reasons.

Rookie of the year - Hopgood qualifies, right? If not, Hands for the money.

Player to watch 24 - Dylbags, has to show he is a bone fide top shelf 5/8 every week or us supporters will be baying for blood.

Junior to watch 24 - Arthur Miller-Stephen. If he can bulk up a bit without losing speed, he may just help with our outside back issue.

Finish 24 - without seeing our recruitment, the best we can hope for is another 6 to 8 finish. That's if we don't have similar injury / suspension issues as this season. We need another ready to go 9, 2 NRL standard centres, a hard running, fast winger and a decent back up 7. Oh yeah, and that game breaker we are supposedly looking for.
