2011 Backline

Ok .. This is a topic that ive been very curious about, Our backline for next year, So now if SK wants to keep hayne at fullback let it be so, Just to name the backs that have played first grade now and who could crack it:

- Jarryd Hayne (Fullback)

- Luke Burt (Wing)

- Eric Grothe (Wing)

- Timana Tahu (Centre)

- Joel Reddy (Centre)

- Jordan Atkins (Wing)

- Jacob Loko (Centre)

- Ken Sio (Wing)

- Chris Walker (Wing)

I wonder whose gonna go where and If were gonna give Atkins an oppurtunity in the first place .. I'd just like to see your thoughts on what would be next years backline and If an injury happens what do we do ?

And now we add Walker.

  • I wouldn't start Sio straight away.
He's still young, and will most probably need some more consistent footy in the NSW Cup before he is definitively ready to have a crack in first-grade.

Purely on the back-line, and solely based on the players we currently have at our disposal, the back-line I'd most likely go with myself would be as follows:

    Jarryd Hayne
    Luke Burt
    Timana Tahu
Joel Reddy (provided he starts the season)
    Eric Grothe

It's what we've seen before, and when they're all on song, they're all fantastic to watch.
  • i made a blog about this a while ago

we are very light on in the centres

i think we are one quality centre short - hopefully tonga can fill that void
  • I dont mind having Atkins in the backline .. He has some potential that kid ! have you seen his one of tries in his debut game ? I posted it on the videos section ! .. Yeh, Sios still young but if worse goes to worse and we have about 3 or 2 backs injured then that will be the time to bring in Sio ..
  • r u sure weve signed atkins? i wouldnt think burt or grothe would get pushed out for him.i know how much people hate this idea but i would like to see maitua get a run in the centres as he played there alot for "THE DOGGIES!. if injuries ravish us then i believe either Loko or Maitua would come in to the centre posistion and sio or Atkins into the wing position.
  • why would this years wooden spooners let a current australian test center go, just to make parra stronger i don't think so
    • because it is common knowledge he has a verbal agreement with the cowboys that he can request a release at any time
  • Atkins would have undoubtedly have been signed purely as depth.
He may have scored that try on debut yes, and whilst it was a good try, I've seen better.

He has potential, but he's lacked the consistency in his game on a regular basis, and doesn't score nearly as often as he should.
There's a few other areas he needs drastic improvement on, and whilst I don't have all of those in my head right now, based on the season that he's had, there will have to be improvement.

On Sio, obviously if injuries occur, and we're lacking any more experienced first-graders to fill whatever void may be left, then yes, both Sio and Loko would no doubt come in and play until those injured players are fully recuperated.
  • Matuia and Grothe (Thats if EG plays at his best) as a pair will run over anyone .. And yes we have signed Atkins. See, This is what im hating .. Were getting these players like Atkins and Matuia who can play in the backline when we have Loko and Sio .. Another way to say that, Weve signed Atkins and his gonna play with wentworthville .. There goes our signings & money towards wenty.
  • Yeah, we've signed Atkins.

I think for Maitua, he might just start off the bench upon his return, to possibly come into the second row, but at the same time, he'll bring a utility value that we don't quite have at the club.
So in a sense, it'll be almost like having two utilities off the bench in 2011, albeit having the ability to play in different positions.

To save replying to another comment of yours JJ, I'll reply to your comment below mine here.
Atkins wouldn't be on a whole heap of money, as he isn't quite an established first-grader as such, thus he wouldn't command large sums of money.
  • Having matuia is pretty handy .. Its like you have someone who can play in the backs and also fowards on the bench ..
